In the course of one's life a person will encounter major influencers. Steve Jerkovits was one of the biggest in my own life. The website of the Saskatchewan Water Polo Association, in discussing the history of water polo in this province said "Steve Jerkovits is credited with creating interest in the sport of water polo in Regina. He approached a number of speed swimmers and life guards at the University pool about playing the game. He was quoted as saying "In the beginning there was very little skill, but lots of determination.". I was one of those people! Steve quickly became one of the major influencers of my life. It did not hurt that he was our next door neighbor at that time. The families were close.
I was in my mid teens, but had a chance to learn the sport with older players, all which helped to grow up a little quicker. Through those early years I made deep friendships with many and to this day those friendships have remained. As I look at the scrapbooks and the memorabilia that I have save I recognized so many people throughout the water polo years that have gone on to be major leaders, business people, educators, medical specialists and others. What an inspiration Steve was to all of us and the sport that he started here is now flourishing and has produced national champions, international players and officials, but most of all fantastic relationships .
Yes indeed, Steve played a major part in my life, was a great friend, neighbor and an inspiration. I am thankful to Steve for much and I know that there are so many people that feel the same way. I got to know Sandor and Elmer quite well since we were the same age and grew up together on Lindsay Street. I am sure they are very proud.
Thanks for so much Steve, may you rest in peace!

Elmer Sr, or Steve as many of us knew him, was a huge influence, if not the catalyst, for bringing the sport of water polo to Regina. Because of him, hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of young people were able to have great adventures, make friends for a lifetime and play one of the best sports ever. I was one of those young people who benefited from Steve's love of the game. For that, I am forever grateful. His legacy continues today as water polo players and coaches in this city are at the top of the heap in Canada. That is a real legacy. Thank you Steve.

Kedves Marika Neni, Sandor, Elemer, Laci and Gabi and families,
I am sorry to hear that Elemer Bácsi has passed. I have many fond memories of him at the pool, church, get togethers and Magyar Haz, while we were living in Regina many years ago. Those few visits we took to Regina and stopping in to visit.
How fortunate to live a long life. May all the memories and his memoirs make each day special and help ease the loss.
God bless all of you
You are in my thoughts
