Obituary of Nita Lillian O'Shaughnessy

Nita Lillian O’Shaughnessy of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at Grace Hospice in Regina. She was predeceased by her father, Gerald; her mother, Vera; her step-father Sam Mayall; her brother, Dennis (Cynthia); and her step-brother, David Mayall (Loretta). Nita is survived by her older brother, Dale (Lol) step- brother, Don Mayall (Arlene); and several nieces and nephews. Nita was born in Moose Jaw, SK to Gerald and Vera on May 8, 1938. She grew up in Moose Jaw, graduating from high school at Central Collegiate in 1956. Nita went on to earn a nursing diploma in 1959 from the Regina General Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the Regina General Hospital over her 34-year career. Nita loved to spend time with her mother, siblings, relatives and their families. Trips to Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Calgary and family cottages to celebrate Christmas, holidays, birthdays and special occasions were looked forward to. Nita covered a lot of miles as an active Greyhound bus user. When getting together wasn’t an option, Nita was always the first to pick up the phone and have a chat. Nita had a love for travel that included trips to Australia, the United Kingdom, Egypt, Israel, many European countries, the US and Mexico, and all Canadian provinces and territories (with the exception of Nunavut as she liked to point out!). As she got older and found travel more difficult, Nita would take equal pleasure in hearing about the travels of her relatives and friends; she especially loved receiving postcards from their destinations! Nita kept busy with her many friends. Special occasions were usually marked with a lunch or dinner at the Hotel Saskatchewan. She always looked forward to get-togethers with her Regina General Hospital nursing alumni. Nita loved going to the movies as well as the theatre and the symphony and even fancied the odd visit to the casino. She was also a regular attendee at the Lieutenant Governor’s New Year’s Day levee celebration at the Government House. Nita was a long-time supporter and frequent season-ticket holder of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and was almost always there to cheer on her favourite team. Nita was a generous soul. She remembered birthdays with cards and “a little mad money”. She donated to many local charities, ranging from Stars Ambulance to the SPCA. Nita was a huge fan of Queen Elizabeth and the Royal family.  So, perhaps a fitting farewell is to say you will be deeply missed by all your relatives and friends, but we will do our best to “Keep Calm and Carry On”. We are planning a gathering for family and friends with details to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
