HERTZOG, Loretta “Jean”
August 4, 1938 - February 7, 2020
On Friday, February 7, 2020, the world lost an incredible woman. Loretta “Jean” Hertzog, age 81, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by loved ones. Jean was predeceased by her mother Christina Magee; her very loving grandparents, and numerous other special family members. Left to cherish her memory is the love of her life of 63 years, Roy Hertzog; and her sons David (Leanne), Doug (Deann) and Robb (Caron). Jean’s legacy will continue on through her grandchildren, Tristan (Anita), Tallas (Sean), Kyle, Tammy (Butch), Brent (Erin), Zachary, Robin (Jesse); and her great grandchildren, Cecelia, Andrew, Dominic, Grayson, Lincoln, Taia, Boston, Ava, and Nash. Jean will be missed dearly by her brothers, Larry Magee (Karin), Steven Magee (Denise); and sister Sylvia Wale-Magee (Gerry). Jean will also be lovingly remembered by many family, friends and neighbours.
Jean was born on August 4th, 1938, to Carl Schaeffer and Christina Magee in Regina, Sk. Jean spent her entire 81 years, 6 months and 3 days showing this world how to be a kind, compassionate, loving and witty woman. In 1956 she began working for the Department of Agriculture (Lands Branch). This is where her co-worker, Margaret Nelson, introduced her to a handsome gentleman named Roy. We could say that the rest is history, but their love story deserves more than that. They had only dated about a year before they were married. They had a love that was like no other. They lived on Roy’s Aunt and Uncle’s farm when they first married, then back to Regina, then off to Wolseley and Swift Current for Roy’s work in Senior’s housing for the government and then back to finally settle in Regina with their three sons, where they bought their first and last home! A few years later, they purchased a cottage at Regina Beach, which soon became one of their favourite spots. Not only did their own children get to experience “The Cottage” life, but their grandchildren and great-grandchildren did as well. A lifetime of memories tucked away in a little cottage on Nicoll Ave. The two of them knew every little thing about one another, there were no secrets, no holding back. Their love was fierce, loyal and breathtakingly beautiful. This past month had been so hard for her and Roy, but we witnessed such devotion, such unselfish love. Putting their foreheads together to say “I love you, Roy” and “I love you, my Jeanie”, those moments will never, ever be forgotten. The standard of love that they had was extremely high, something that I know all of us will try our hardest to emulate! They had an ageless, a timeless, an endless love; one that will echo through eternity. She was just the best at all she did, from her beautifully knitted baby outfits, afghans, and barbie clothes, to her festive and gorgeous ceramic creations. She could light up the room when she sat down at her organ, and spent countless hours teaching others her talents. She was an avid animal lover and would welcome pets, of any variety, with open arms. She spent over 25 years in her spotless career working for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, where she was awarded the President’s Award of Excellence. She was not only dedicated to her work and family, but was also dedicated to helping others in the community. She was the secretary for the Uplands Community Association for 8 years, and often helped out at the church whenever she could. She truly deserved her most honoured position as the amazing matriarch of the Hertzog clan! It’s remarkable that despite all of the physical struggles over the past months, she still wasn’t quite ready to go. Despite having to struggle to breathe, she was content to be here just a little longer. She knew it was happening; she didn’t try to fight it, nor did she welcome it with open arms. She just accepted it with her usual class and grace. This past month has been incredibly hard, but it has been incredibly joyful too! She kept us all on our toes, through the pain and the fear, by reminding us of who we are as a family and how much we need each other. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Palliative Home Care Nurses. A special thanks to care aides Janice, Cindy and Tanya. Without them, Jean wouldn’t have been able to spend her final days at home with her family.
Funeral Service will be held at Heritage United Church, 1050 Arnason St., Regina, SK, on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to make a donation to your charity of choice.
