Obituary of Roger Kiendl
Roger Kiendl, late of Regina, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at the age of 85 years. He was predeceased by parents, Frank and Olive, wife Beverley (née Smith), and daughter Lynn. Roger is survived by his sons, William and Anthony (Joanne Bristol), grandson Jackson, and extended family.
Roger was born (1934) and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Erasmus Hall High School and graduated from R.C.A. Institutes, a technical institute concerned with the design and application of television systems.
Roger served in the Air National Guard starting in 1953. His early career centered around military electronics and led to the design of such systems for the Hazeltine Corp., Bulova Watch Company, Gulf and Western Corp., and Peerless Instruments of Elmhurst, New York.
While at Peerless, and in conjunction with Curtis Wright and the Westinghouse Corporation, he became the designer and Project Engineer for the nuclear reactor rod control system installed on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise (CVN 65).
He met his wife and life-long companion Beverley, of Eriksdale, Manitoba, while she was working and training as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. They married in 1963 (in Winnipeg) and celebrated 51 years of marriage until Beverley’s passing in 2014. They initially lived in The Bronx, then moved to Floral Park, New York. Roger and Beverley relocated the family to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the fall of 1971 (where Roger eventually became a Canadian citizen).
In 1975, Roger settled into his long-term occupation and position as Sales Manager of Video Systems for Servo Electronic Systems, Ltd., of Winnipeg, providing television systems for Manitoba and North-Western Ontario until he retired in 1999.
Roger was a member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, the Winnipeg Executives Association, the Manitoba Protective Officers Association, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and was a Board member of St. Amant Centre.
Roger was a kind, soft-spoken and good-natured husband, father, friend and community member. He enjoyed travel and many family road trips. His interests included automobiles, airplanes, and especially trains; he was an active model railroader for most of his life. He was especially committed to his wife Beverley, and will be laid to rest with her in a private burial at Eriksdale Cemetery. Roger will be deeply missed by family and friends. Rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends so wishing may make memorial donations in Roger’s name to the charity of your choice.
