Obituary of Jean Shirley Fletcher
FLETCHER, Jean Shirley
(nee Miller)
Jean passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at her residence in Regina, Saskatchewan. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Eugene.
Jean was one of eight children born to John and Eileen Miller in Lemberg, Saskatchewan on August 26, 1935. Predeceased by Bud Miller and Audrey Huget, she is survived by her remaining siblings; Marilyn Pfiefer, Arlene Hollinger, Doris Ursaki, Loretta Lanoway and Glen Miller.
Jean always had fond memories of growing up on the farm where she developed her love for gardening and all things outdoors, which continued throughout her life. She met Eugene at a bus stop on a rainy day in Regina, and they were married in 1957. Soon they started their own family that quickly grew to six children: Holly (Daryl) Jaques, Dave (Bernadette) Fletcher, Dan (Sylvie) Fletcher, Don (Erica) Fletcher, Troy (Lynn) Fletcher and Candace (Graham) Fletcher. Jean loved her children but adored and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean and Eugene have nine grandchildren; Brody, Chelsea, Karlie, Krystine, Courtney, Etienne, Andréanne, Allison, and Mattea and twelve great grandchildren; Davin, Jayden, Avery, Kingsley, Callie, Payton, Halle, Max, Bentley, Everly, Emmanuel and Riel.
Jean was an amazing Mother, Grandmother, Wife, organizer, cook, friend and volunteer in an always busy household when her children were growing up. Over the years, Jean and Eugene opened their home to many foster children who made the big family even more lively, busy and blessed. There were always homemade goodies and a love of activities. Jean was always positive and caring. Some of Jean’s volunteer work included a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and Foster Parent Board member for many years, and a Heart and Stroke Volunteer canvasser until recently.
Jean and Eugene spent many years tending to bees and processing honey at the family cottage at Saskatchewan Beach. She morphed that effort into unique beeswax candles, and she invented her own “miracle” beeswax cream that was a big seller at the Regina Farmer’s Market. The cottage was home to many special events and sleepovers where many memories were made. Many hours were spent sailing on Last Mountain Lake and tending to a large garden on the beach property.
Flowers graciously declined. Donations may be made in memory of Jean to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan Inc, 2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 1738 Quebec Avenue, Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9.
