Valerian (“Val”) Frederick Pestyk
Val passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2020 at the age of 96 years. He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Gisela Pestyk; his loving wife Catharine (“Kay”); sister Claudia Hall; and brother Otto. Val is survived by his son Terrence (Deloris); grandchildren Tracey Fauchon and Scott (Renee); great-grandchildren Alexa and Andrew Fauchon, and Hailey Pestyk; sister Gertrude McMillin; sister-in-law Liz; as well as many nieces and nephews. Val was born near Chernovitz, Bukovina, Romania on February 27, 1924. At the age of five he and his mother moved to Canada where they joined with his father and settled in Southey, SK. On May 10, 1943, Val joined the Navy and served as a wireless operator during WWII. In 1946, he married Kay Dumville and their son Terry was born in 1948. That same year, Val and Kay moved to Regina where Val began a new career with Canada Post. In 1975 he transferred to the Regina R.C.M.P. Depot Division as Personnel Administrator. Val retired in 1985. During his retirement, Val spent many hours working with ham radio, building equipment and experimenting with new concepts in radio technology. He also loved working with metal and was often found in his workshop, working at his lathe. Val and Kay enjoyed camping with family and would often take their grand kids to the mountains for enjoyable adventures. In 2008, Val and Kay sold their home and moved to Marion Chateau. Val was in the beginning stages of Dementia at this time and when Kay passed in 2012, Val was moved to Precious Memories Care Home. He resided there at the time of his passing. Val will always be remembered for his great sense of humour and his laughter. He had a smile for everyone and everyone enjoyed his company, even when his memory had faded. We, the family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Pervaiz as well as the staff of Precious Memories for all the comfort and care that they provided for Val during his time as a resident. A family interment will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Val to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 2550 – 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1 or online at https://alzheimer.ca/en/sk.
