Obituary of Walter South

SOUTH, WALTER It is with profound sadness we tell of the passing of Walt South and yet with joy we celebrate his life. He was born on June 2, 1920 and passed away on June 17, 2009. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth; parents Jack and Nell; brothers Jack, Chuck, and Art; his sister Girlie. Walt is survived by his two daughters, Susan South of Regina and Sandy Walker (Kevin) of Regina Beach; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister Joan Wagman and brother Bob, both of Regina; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends with whom he golfed and curled all his life. Walt served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II in England as an engine mechanic working on Hercules and Lancaster bombers. It was a very special time for him. He formed a bond with relatives in England that continued throughout his entire life. On his return he partnered with his brothers in a successful trucking business, when they sold the trucks they then farmed just outside of Regina. He worked hard, laughed lots and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an honorary life member of the Royal Regina Golf Club, the Tartan Curling Club and the Elks. He loved sports, he golfed and curled up until November of last year. He shot his age or lower 20 times since 2005. A member of his golf syndicate said of him, Hes accurate and hits them straight off the tee?, this describes not only his golf game, but his life. He was a straight shooter, an honorable man. We will miss him. A very special thanks to Dr. Suri, Dr. McMillan, the staff of the Palliative Care Unit, especially Bev Burns, the Chief, and the caring staff of 4B at the Pasqua Hospital. A celebration of Walts life will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina with Rev. Ronald H. Sutton officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date. For those so wishing, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walts memory to Regina Palliative Care Inc., 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina S4T 7T1.
