Father Hogan was a very soft spoken and kind man. He was Chaplain of our Father Burns Council #5949 Knights of Columbus, when he was the priest at St. Cecilia Parish in Regina. His homilies were always captivating and sincere.
I attended a number of funerals over which he presided, and he always left the grieving families with a real sense of his caring and compassion.
When he was a resident of Martha House, I would often pick him up on Sunday morning and drive him to Pioneer Village, where he would preside over the mass for the residents of the care home.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend his 100th birthday celebration at Trinity Manor.
Father Hogan will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered.
May he rest in eternal peace.

Father Hogan was a “member” of the Ursaki family right from his placement as Holy Cross Parish priest. My parents, Frank and Anne, loved and respected him. As a student at St. Andrew’s school, I enjoyed his many classroom visits where he tried explaining church doctrine in terms that young children could understand, and then taking questions afterward. I remember one classmate, who had just lost a pet asking, “Do dogs go to heaven?” And I remember Father Hogan’s answer, which was something like, “In heaven, you will be completely happy, so whatever makes you happy will be there.” What a great answer! Even as a child I remember thinking that it was super!
Father Hogan officiated for my first communion, confession, confirmation, my wedding to my dear Brian, the baptism of our children, my mother’s funeral (including doing a most memorable eulogy), my father’s funeral, and on the altar for my son’s wedding, and for Brian’s memorial. He wrote me many letters of encouragement and blessing. He was a source of love and comfort throughout my life. I’m so grateful.
We enjoyed many dinners together through the years. My children grew up knowing that Froggy Hoggy would be at table with us. He was part of every birthday, anniversary, Christmas, Easter... He and my father toured Asia together and were perfect travel companions.
Once, when I was a child, he went fishing with us to a boathouse owned by Father Albert Goetz. Father Hogan was not a fisherman, so this was a new experience for him. I caught a fish and my father gave him the net to help me land it, but he wasn’t adept at making the scoop, and lost my fish. He knew I was perturbed! A couple of days later, I received a card in the mail with the return address: “Number 1 fisherman” with a fish insignia, and inside, he asked if I had forgiven him yet and that he was so sorry.” Small acts of kindness are memorable even after so many years.
Fifteen years ago, Brian and I moved to Vernon, B.C. Whenever I have had visits back in Regina, I always visited Father Hogan, our last visit being in March of 2019. He was approaching his 100th birthday. His sense of humour was still lively as he prefaced a story he wanted to tell me by saying, “Back when I was young, when I was 85...”. He also told me of his desire to be laid to rest in Ireland, with his parents. He sadly told me that his father had died before could see him as a priest. It must have taken great courage and determination to leave his beloved Ireland, and his parents and siblings to come to Canada, an “unknown quantity”, and in wartime! But he embraced Regina and made it a better place for all he met.
I’m sure that, on Tuesday, the road rose up to meet him, the wind was at his back, the “Son” shone warm upon his face and that he heard the voice of the Lord he served so lovingly saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share in your master’s happiness.”
Thank you to the Hogan family and to Ireland for this great gift.
Love, Lynne Selinger

I remember Father Hogan very well as a kid when he was with the parish in Kenaston. He was the first priest in my life and left a memorable impression.I was a part of the large Croatian community that lived in the Kenaston area and still does today.I remember Father Hogan encouraging us boys to become altar boys by learning the latin responses in mass. One day at catechism he took a bunch of us boys to his place to watch the allstar baseball game instead of having catechism class. This was a big thrill for us as many of us did not yet have TV sets at home. While Father Hogan was firm in his discipline with us he set us on the right path in life which I will always be thankful for.
