Obituary of Richard Carl Joseph Schikowsky
SCHIKOWSKY, Richard
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard, who left us on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at the age of 67 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Veronica. Left to cherish his memories and mourn his passing are his wife Debbie; sisters Maureen Tomporowski (Garry) and Kathleen Murchison (Harvey); sisters-in-law Bonnie Desjarlais (Wayne) and Margie Gurash; brother-in-law Ken Armstrong (Heather); and numerous nieces, nephews, godsons and goddaughters. Richard has undoubtedly left countless others who loved him, who enjoyed his company, and who called him friend. Richard loved life, and Saskatchewan gave him the opportunity to enjoy it to the fullest. He lived the entirety of it at his family farm near Avonlea, Saskatchewan. There, he and Debbie grain farmed and raised a herd of Charolaise cattle for over three decades, until 2014, when deteriorating health forced him into retirement. In addition to ranching and farming, Richard loved hunting and fishing. Endeavours into the fields, forests and lakes were sought as often as possible, were enriched by sharing them with friends, new and old, and by passing his love of the outdoors to the next generation. Many owe their lifelong love of fishing and hunting to Richard, learned as young people. The Saskatchewan Roughriders provided Richard with equal parts joy and anger. When push came to shove, Richard was as green as anyone. When Avonlea won the title of Riderville in 2010, he was dubbed “Riderville Richard”, and was honoured with a jersey with the same name on it. Richard enjoyed many years vacationing in the Caribbean with his family and friends, leaving a legacy with his Caribbean “family” as well. Ultimately, Richard will be remembered for his absolute love of children and youth. He knew when to hug, when to tease, when to scare, and when to teach. Kids loved Richard. He truly was everyone’s uncle. This mantle will undoubtedly be the legacy that remains long into the future. We love you, Richard, and even though you are no longer with us, we still feel your love. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard to Myeloma Canada, 1255 TransCanada, Suite 160, Dorval, QC H9P 2V4.
