I was saddened to read of Bill's recent passing. I had known him for many years professionally, particularly around the time he operated on my son, after a motorcycle accident, with excellent results. Deep condolences to Hilary.

Dr Ryan, I express condolences to you on hearing of the illness and passing of Dr Silver. I realize that illness is a difficult one with generally not great prospects for a favorable outcome. I became acquainted with Dr Silver for only a short time while attending First Baptist during the late 1990's until 2004. I came to realize Dr Silver's broad and deep commitment to the life of the church, which was far above and beyond that which I could ever hope to achieve. I enjoy reading anything regarding Dr. Silver, which always describes a very accomplished man and physician !
You will likely still remember me from the trials and tribulation I experienced being on A/V ministry at the time, where there had been considerable difficulty with trying to making correct adjustments to the system's sound board which was within the confines of a small booth in the upper northwest corner of the sanctuary. As I'm certain you will recall, it was very difficult to hear what was going on from that location and I can recall your giving hand signals from the choir loft opposite as to the adjustments needed. I want to thank you for your mentoring and support during that time.

Dear Hillary and family, It was with great sadness that I read of Bill's passing Sunday past. Cheryl and I have come to cherish the friendship we had with you and Bill. Bill was the consumate gentleman, always so positive, so willing to help and such a strong Christian, and a Iron Man on top of all that. Bill was delightful. I do know he excelled as a surgeon and will be sadly nissed in the OR as a mentor and friend. What will the bison now do without their champion leader? Our sympathies are extended to you and the family as you cross this river of grief. Be strong in the knowledge he is with the Saviour he adored. Peace,
Jim Toth

I remember Bill as an open and welcoming good man, a Christian who recognized its common values and engaged in ecumenical initiatives. He set the broken femur of my disabled son and regularly inquired after him when we met. Meeting and chatting with Bill was always a happy occasion and it was my pleasure and benefit that he was a part of my life.

Bill went out of his way to connect with people, and to help them, medically and otherwise. As a friend, I will miss him deeply. He took a keen interest in my two children and encouraged them both through difficulties as they grew up. He got me involved in numerous initiatives, and had a way of bringing out the best in people. He started organizations, and helped organizations. He had vision for health care becoming more of an integrated system. He was a great prayer warrior, a strong Gideon, and a faithful builder of the local church. He was ever eager and willing to share the gospel with those that could benefit from the good news and input of God into their lives. Bill had his share of griefs through life, but he never let any setback hold him down, he bounced back from personal relationship tragedies, health difficulties, and he never gave up hope. No one, was too far gone to be helped and prayed for by Bill. The world has lost a truly amazing man, and we are all poorer for it, but we can take comfort in that He knew his maker. Truly Bill Silver was a light to the world.

To the Family of William,
I got to know William, or Bill as he was, at the YMCA pool. I was coaching swimming at the time and he would come in every morning at precisely the same time - like clockwork! He would put his goggles on, slip into the same lane every time and off he'd go. His stroke was not "pretty" and he knew that and laughed about it. What inspired me about Bill was his commitment to swim every day and his dogged determination to only stop when his target had been met. I don't think he ever missed a day. If I remember correctly, his early days of swimming spawned into triathlons. And when I did speak with him, he was always pleasant, engaging and happy. In an instant, you could tell he was a good man who did good things to make the world a better place.
