MURRAY, Virginia “Ginny”

(née Nenson)

Ginny was born on August 25, 1929 in Wheatstone, Saskatchewan. She was the first girl of twelve children born to Maria and Bucur Nenson. Ginny was initially raised in Ontario before the family moved to Saskatchewan, along with her nine brothers and two sisters. Her first language was Romanian, but she learned to speak English at Benson School in Regina, as did her siblings. She was involved with her brothers, Sam and Leo, in building and opening the first drive-in theatre in Regina. She also worked for many businesses in Regina over the years before settling in at Carling O’Keefe Brewery, where she worked until her retirement. It was also there that she met her husband, Bill Murray. They married at St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Church but later joined the parish at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where she spent many years volunteering with the ladies auxiliary, the Orthodox Centre in the Qu’Appelle Valley, and as a member of the Episcopate Council, headquartered in Grass Lake, Michigan. Both she and her husband were instrumental in the renovation and rejuvenation of St. Nicholas Church over the years, holding a number of offices. In her youth, Ginny became involved with AROY, a group of young Orthodox Christians. She was part of an inter-Orthodox Committee in Regina and she worked at the Episcopate children’s camps at Shell Valley, Manitoba and Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan for several years during her summer vacations. This remained with her because, after retirement, she also worked at the Romanian Orthodox summer camps near Fort Qu’Appelle. Ginny leaves behind her husband, Bill Murray; her daughter, Dianne (Riad) Farah; her grandchildren, Katherine (Josh) Mekilo, Jaime (Rob) Hwacinski, and  Christopher (Courtney) Farah; her five great-granddaughters, Hannah, Josie, Gracie, Ellie, and Laura; brother, Alec Nenson; sister-in-law, Lynn Nenson (Leo), brother-in-law, John Harold (Mary); several nieces and nephews; as well as stepson Craig Murray and his children, Jonathan and McKenzie, and his wife, Tracy. Special thanks to the staff in the Alzheimer’s unit at Santa Maria Nursing Home. Funeral Service will be held at St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, 1770 St. John Street, Regina, SK, on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Cosmin Vint officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park, 815 Assiniboine Avenue East. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, limited space may be available at the service.
