Obituary of Ginny Mah

Ginny Mah (nee Yee Wai Chan) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, on the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Ginny was born on December 26, 1931, in Toyshan, Guangdong, China. Ginny married Danny Mah on August 20, 1948, in an arranged marriage. After many years of hardship in China and Hong Kong, she immigrated to Canada on March 26, 1958. She arrived by train from Vancouver, BC, on March 31, 1958, to Kipling, SK where she and Danny, along with Danny’s father, Henry Mah, operated The Hub Cafe. Ginny was a talented chef who created her own Chinese cuisine but also developed skills to create North American dishes, sometimes even with a Hungarian flare!

In 1979, Ginny and Danny became the sole owners of The Hub Cafe, their pride and joy. They worked day and night to ensure prosperous futures for their family.  Ginny and Danny sold The Hub Cafe in 1995 and retired in their dream house they built in Kipling. In 2007, Ginny and Danny moved to Regina to be closer to their family.

Ginny’s love and legacy was, and is, her family. Her most cherished memories included large family gatherings. Ginny was an avid fan of all sporting activities, music recitals, and any type of event that her grandchildren were involved in. She was a brilliant, kind, caring, and joyful soul that radiated happiness all around her. Ginny was the epitome of unconditional love, not only for her family, but also for her friends and her “Hub Cafe family of customers,” including the students who would visit daily. We will miss her dearly, but she will be with us in our hearts forever with lots of love and pride.

Ginny was predeceased by her parents, Fong Chung, and Shang Li Yee; and by her son Randy Mah. She is survived by her husband Danny Mah; children, Judy Salway (Nigel), Andy Mah (Wendy), Sandy Mah (Holly), Julie Toppings (Dan) and Donny Mah; grandchildren, Andrew Mah (Amy), Emily Mah, Jeffrey Toppings (Jamie), Geena Salway, Evan Mah, Nathaniel Mah, Kyle Mah, Jillian Toppings, Nicole Mah, Kaidon Mah, and Kaitlyn Mah.

A Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK, on Saturday, August 19 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 815 Assiniboine Ave. E, Regina, SK to follow.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the ACU team on Unit 4A, and the Palliative Care Unit on 3A, both at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, SK.
