Obituary of Heulwen Hopkins

HEULWEN HOPKINS (née LEWIS)

1934 – 2017

Heulwen passed away after a short illness at the Pasqua hospital on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. She was born in Coelbren, South Wales and attended Ynyscedwyn School. Heulwen trained and became a qualified SRN in 1956 at the Merthyr and Aberdare Group School of Nursing and where she met her future husband. Heulwen loved the surgical nursing and became quite an expert at it. She was also the Charge Nurse at a large private nursing home in Penarth near Cardiff. In 1968, Heulwen emigrated with her young family to St. Catherines, Ontario and then to Regina in 1970. In Regina, she made many friends, helped her husband at his medical practice, and brought up her young family. However, Heulwen always missed Wales. She was an excellent cook and loved entertaining her friends. Heulwen had a twinkling sense of humour and loved children, yellow flowers, knitting, and music, especially Opera. She leaves to mourn her husband of 59 years, Howard; sons, Martin, Stephen, and Richard; brother Philip (Bessie); cousin Nan (Gwilym) who was more like a sister; Indeg, school friend from her early years; Debbie, long-time friend of 20 years; niece and nephew, Bethan and Huw; as well as many overseas friends. Grateful thanks to Dr. Stuart MacMillan for his care over many years, the staff of 4D at the Pasqua hospital, and the staff and physicians of Pasqua ICU for their kindness and care.
