Obituary of Margaret May Mortin
August 23, 1923 – December 20, 2021
Ninety-eight wonderful years of earthly life came to a close exactly the way Peg wished!
Mom was born at Kedleston, SK to parents George and Jesse (nee Rogan) Bradley and raised there with seven other siblings. She was predeceased by both parents and siblings, Jean (Peter Grund), Beth (Ken Mortin), Lois (Ivor Jones), Archie (Sylvia Proctor) and Jack (Shirle Klatt). Her husband Jack Died in 1998. Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Helen (Ray Busche) and Louise (Roy Hickey) and many nieces and nephews all of whom she loved dearly.
After attending Normal School in Moose Jaw, she enjoyed a short teaching career at rural schools in the Imperial and Findlater districts. Mom married John Alvin “Jack” Mortin in 1943 and moved to the farm at Dilke. Together for 55 years, they welcomed son, Doug in 1946 and built a wonderful life with great memories for all.
Mom was highly active and involved in her community. In the late 1940’s she joined the Dilke Red Cross and was awarded a life-time membership and the Queen Elizabeth medal when the society celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. At that event, she is quoted as saying “When you’re doing the same things for the same purpose…. You get to be a closer friend.”
She was a member of the Dilke and Bethune United Church, sang in their choirs and played the organ, belonged to the United Church Women (UCW), taught Sunday school, and hosted many church ministers at her table. Renowned for her cooking and baking, particularly butter tarts and buns, no one ever left her home hungry. Card games were a large part of her life, and she could hardly wait to get her feet under a card table for a game of bridge or five hundred. As recently as two weeks ago her bridge partners say she still played a sharp game. Peg cherished everyone she met and particularly those in her home communities of Kedleston, Dilke, Bethune and the Bentley of Regina. Please know that you all gave her reason to enjoy a great life!
For many years she and Jack spent winters in Arizona and from time to time travelled throughout the United States, making new friends along the way.
Left to celebrate her wonderful life, her son Doug and spouse Leslie; grandchildren Michael (Angie Wagar) of Regina, Catherine (Raul Conde) of Guangzhou, China and Andrea (Eric Zegarra) of Ottawa; and great-grandchildren Nathan, Sahcia and Zoe Mortin, Sebastian, Leah and Nicolas Conde and Tyler and Cecelia Zegarra. She was always interested in their activities and proud of the way they lived their lives.
With Cath and family expected to return to Canada in July/August 2022, we are planning a joyous Celebration of Life at that time, as was Mom’s request.
Be encouraged to join her family in being happy for Peg’s healthy, happy, and fulfilled life and her dignified and graceful death as was her last wish. Laughed often, loved always!
