Obituary of Don Stevens
April 20, 1956 – June 19, 2022
In the waning hours of Sunday June 19th, after a short illness, Don Stevens passed peacefully at the Regina General Hospital surrounded by close family and friends.
A force of nature, Don had incredible energy, wicked intelligence and a great sense of humour. He also possessed unbelievable discipline and an iron will.
Born in Montreal, Don’s adventurous soul led him to mountain climbing, living on a sailboat for two years and scuba diving. In his early 20s, that iron will enabled him to make his way out of the wilderness with a broken back, shattered arm and collapsed lung after falling 60 feet while scaling a mountain rock face in Alberta.
25 years ago on a blind date Don met the person whom was to become the love of his life, Margot Hurlbert. Discovering a shared passion for fitness, life-long learning, camping, and family, a few years later Don married Margot in a fairy tale celebration at the Banff Springs Hotel. Don enjoyed living life to its fullest and travelled the world with Margot. He especially loved Scuba Diving with Margot and they enjoyed many undersea adventures together including most recently spending 6 weeks in Roatan last winter (one of those living on a dive boat).
Don was an amazing father and step-father to four boys. He and his wife Margot took them on many holidays in a giant RV (the ‘Grey Goose”) that sometimes experienced brake failure in the mountains. “Those mountains keep trying to kill me!” he quipped. Quintessential Don.
On the career front, he shifted from civil engineering to finance, which fascinated him. After a long career as FCC’s Treasurer, Don became a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina (Economics), where he also taught financial literacy – one of his passions. Don’s love of learning and mentorship didn’t come to an end with his passing. If asked, he would identify his greatest achievement as the success of his children and family, students, and mentees.
Fiercely loyal, he maintained a strong connection with his closest friends for decades, including his best friend Max Buxton and the mother of his children, Kellie Garrett, whom Margot embraced as family.
Don is lovingly remembered by his wife Margot; his sons Max Stevens, Connor Stevens, Michael Dynna, and Morgan Dynna; brothers Trevor, Allan, and Jim; and sister Cathy; as well as many extended family members and friends. A special thank you to the caring people of the Regina General Hospital, especially Marianna. A celebration of his life will take place at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
