Obituary of Joy C. Pelling

JOY C. PELLING It is with profound sadness we announce the death of our mom and grandma Joy on Friday July 19, 2013 surrounded by family. Joy grew from simple prairie roots and joined in a life partnership with Bob to make a long lasting connection to family and community. Born in Regina on May 24, 1928, she grew up during the depression years and met Bob in 1949. They were married in 1952. At that time Bob was playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and they became lifelong supporters. During those early years Joy worked in accounting at Fyfe Equipment and the Hotel Saskatchewan. In the fifties Joy and Bob established Pelling Electric Ltd. Shortly after, family life began with the arrival of daughter Traci, followed by sons Tim and Andrew. In the sixties and onward their family and social life focused on their cottage at Katepwa Lake and also their growing involvement with the Wa Wa Shrine Temple. As the years moved on, Joy and Bob enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends in Palm Springs. Their family now includes Traci’s husband, Ross Mahoney, their children Michael and Caitlyn, and Tim’s daughter Nawinda. Throughout her life, Joy was never shy to express her thoughts. Her passions included family and friends, studying literature and the arts, and entertaining with her personality and her cooking. She took her passions into the community by volunteering for numerous organizations including IODE, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, The Liberal Party and the Celebrate Canada committee. Joy’s interest in reading about and discussing sports, politics, history and world affairs never stopped: ”Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last.” (Samuel Johnson) Joy’s family says that she was a strong, loving and imaginative woman who is loved and missed. Joy was predeceased by her parents, brother Bert , sister Hazel, and by Bob in 2008. She is missed by her children, grandchildren, sister Jackie, their families and her community of friends. As per Joy’s wishes the family is having a private memorial service. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Joy’s memory may be made to the Wa Wa Shrine Patient Transportation Fund, 2065 Hamilton Street, Regina, SK S4P 2E1 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina SK, S4P 2R3.
