Obituary of John Frazier Chaney

John Frazier Chaney, devoted husband of Betsy (Dormuth) Chaney, passed away after a brief illness. He was the only child of Archibald and Daisy Chaney of Croyden, England. Predeceased by his parents, and his first wife, Elena, John will be deeply missed by his second wife Betsy [Otten Dormuth]; her daughter Elsbeth [Gregory Hutchings]; fondly remembered by Victor [Bev Morell]; and Edward Dormuth. He was delighted to be acquainted with Betsy’s grandchildren, Jeffrey, [Tate and Ava], and their mother Jodie; Jacklyn and Michael Grisdale, [Ruby and Simone] and their mother/grandmother Susan Dormuth. Betsy’s nephew Victor [Tineke] de Kruif of The Netherlands is saddened by John’s passing as are Betsy’s sisters-in-law, Anne Dormuth, Anne Jelinski, Doreen Thiessen and many nieces and nephews. John served in World War II as a member of the Royal Military Police from 1939 - 1948, receiving the Africa Star, the 1939/45 Star and the War Medal, 1939 - 1945. John married Elena Ruscanu in Vienna in 1947. Following discharge from the Army, John took employment with the British Ordinance Survey. The Chaneys immigrated to Canada in 1957 whereupon John worked for the Saskatchewan Department of Highways. He transferred to the Local Government Board achieving the position of Board Secretary before retiring in 1982. John was a member of King Hiram Lodge, Grand Lodge Saskatchewan and a Member of the Scottish Rite, an involvement that spanned six decades. John volunteered at the Plains Hospital, Wascana Hospital, and with countless other organizations. Recently The Chaney’s celebrated twenty-one years of marriage. Together they had traveled throughout western Canada, to the United Kingdom and Europe. Art, exercise classes, musical events, and theatre were highlights in their lives. Upon Betsy’s admission to Long Term Care, John dedicated his energies to visiting her daily. The family thanks Pauline and Patricia Griffin, Murray Selby, Judy Parsons, George and Donna Costella, Ann Dormuth as well as George Reimer and Bob Sharp for their friendship and many kindnesses over the years. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Balfour officiating.
