Uncle Joe Nickolejsin took Darlene and me to Poland in 1978. Before that, other than Regina, Darlene had been to Disneyland, so she found that staying with relatives (none of which were hers) and visiting Auschwitz (her Maternal grandmother's home) was a huge culture shock. When we finally got a hotel room on day 8, she and I smoked cigarettes and drank homemade 80% vodka while she cried for two hours, saying, "I don't know why I am crying!" I had a fabulous time with Uncle Joe and Darlene, arranging travel in Poland and London England. London was a great relief--people actually spoke a language we could understand most of the time. I loved showing her the sites of London.
She had a special place in my heart. I regret that she never visited us in Mesa or Calgary. Rest well, Darlene.
