Obituary of Robert Lachlan Hughes

Bob was born to Robert Wesley Hughes and Helen Elizabeth Hughes on June 1, 1944. He was named after his father and his mother's maiden name (MacLachlan). Bob was born in Regina, SK. He lived in various cities across Canada including Edmonton, Burnaby, Montreal, Mississauga, Saskatoon and Calgary. Bob eventually came to settle in the Queen City. He began his writing career at the Leader-Post in 1962 as a copy boy. He went on to become one of Saskatchewan’s most renowned sports writers and personalities. Bob’s life was sports. His passion was writing. He was one of the few lucky enough to combine both. In a book he had started, but has yet to see the shelves, Bob wrote, “I have decided that the secret to life is to keep on living. You should always have something that will get you up the next morning, and the morning after that. And, it has to be something you are passionate about. It has to be something you are good at. It has to be something that is good for people.” Bob is survived by his two sons, Geoffrey and Ryan, both of Calgary, who are the greatest gifts life gave him. He is also survived by his brother Peter Hughes of Regina and his sister Marni Zafar of New Jersey. Bob will be so missed by his nieces and nephews; by his “Sainted Hillsdale Aunt,” Irene; and by so many golfers, sport enthusiasts and dear friends far and near. A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at the Conexus Arts Centre, 200 Lakeshore Drive, Regina, SK on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bob, may be made to Special Olympics Saskatchewan, 353 Broad Street Regina, SK, S4R 1X2.
