BENJAMIN “BEN” STEPHEN JOHN CHECKOWY

August 14, 1951 – January 11, 2014

Ben passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 11, 2014 while away from his home in Regina, Saskatchewan doing what he loved, photography. Ben is survived by his loving partner of twenty-four years, Judy Danelley; mother Helen of Saskatoon; son Jason Kaufhold (Joelynn) of Saskatoon; daughter Robin Checkowy of Saskatoon; grandchildren Amelia, Elizabeth, Xavier and Matthias; brother Jack (Francine) of Ottawa, Ontario; sister Lousie Bell (Lyle) of Saskatoon and numerous nieces and nephews. Ben was predeceased by his father, Stephen of Saskatoon.

Ben was born in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan and grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ben graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972 with a Bachelor of Computer Science. After he graduated he moved to Regina and worked for Sasktel and Direct West. Ben was a pioneer in bringing the internet to Saskatchewan.

Ben’s true passion was photography. In 2000 Ben started his studio Aperture Photographic. Ben was a passionate artist constantly developing his craft right up until the end. Through his camera Ben captured countless musicians, models, royalty and families. Ben was a remarkable contributor to the photographic community always giving selflessly with positive encouragement and advice to anyone while never asking for anything in return.

A Celebration of Ben’s Life will be held at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, monetary or cat food donations in memory of Ben may be made to the People for Animals of Saskatchewan, PO Box 33066, Cathedral Postal Outlet, Regina, SK S4T 7X2.
