Obituary of Barbara Esther Schmidt

BARBARA ESTHER SCHMIDT January 31, 1938 – March 11, 2014 Barbara passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Esther Stith and her brother Dale Stith. Barbara is survived by her children, Susan; Gail (Martin) and children Christopher, Jeffrey, and Kelsey; David (Elena) and children Richelle (Mike), Kimber-Leigh (Tyler), Lyndsey (Ben), James and Annysa; two great-grandchildren, Colby and Lily; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was born in Nipawin, SK. After graduating high school Barbara moved to Regina. She married Elmer Wayne Schmidt on October 12, 1957. He passed away in 2008. Barbara was a homemaker until her youngest child went to school after which she worked for various Regina businesses as a bookkeeper or a secretary. She loved curling as a competitor, event organizer, volunteer and fan. Barbara played tennis and was a huge Saskatchewan Roughrider fan. She enjoyed being a Regina Public Library ESL tutor, and a volunteer at many Eureka Fellowship Club events. Barbara loved cooking, especially trying new recipes, knitting, photography, sewing, playing bridge, and working in her flower garden. She looked forward to attending the Nipawin Hometown Reunions. Barbara’s greatest joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family is forever grateful for her Eureka Fellowship Club family. Barbara was proud to have celebrated her 9th year of sobriety August 2013. As her COPD progressed, and even when she was on oxygen twenty-four hours a day, Barbara worked hard to live independently in her own home, continued to drive her car and fiercely resisted offered help. Barbara’s family would like to thank the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region heath care providers who provided her with excellent care. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Barbara, may be made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, 1231 – 8th Street East, Saskatoon, SK, S7H 0S5.
