Obituary of Janice Lea Flaman

JANICE LEA FLAMAN (née OTTENBREIT) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Janice Lea Flaman. Janice was born on September 20, 1956 and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, from complications of meningitis at the Regina General Hospital on Friday, February 10, 2017. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of over 36 years, Peter; son Russell (Amanda) and their son Thomas; sons Tanner and Brent (Ashley); parents Del and Lorette Ottenbreit; brothers, Ken (Carolyn), Randy (Deb), and Jason (Alana); as well as many other relatives and friends. Janice was predeceased by her grandson William; and her father- and mother-in-law, William and Mary Flaman. Janice was born and raised in Regina, where she attended St. John School and Marian High School. She attended Campion College at the University of Regina where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in 1976. Janice met Peter at a dance in Southey in 1978 and they were married on June 14, 1980. Janice worked as a technical writer for SaskTel, and after becoming a mother, she returned to the U of R and earned a Bachelor of Education with Great Distinction in 1988. Her teaching career was split between Argyle Elementary School from 1988 until 1997, and Grant Road School until 2006. During these years, Janice also embraced the joys of motherhood and supported the farm operation by cooking and delivering meals to the fields for the whole crew. In wintertime, she never missed an opportunity to watch her boys on the curling ice. Janice learned to quilt at a young age and her skill continued to blossom over her lifetime – her stitching was neat and her corners were perfect. When not busy with a needle and thread, Janice could be found immersed in a book. She kept a journal of all of her reads and could always be counted on for a great recommendation. Finally, as her sons grew up and she found herself with more time to spare, Janice took great pleasure in maintaining a vegetable garden and beautiful flower beds throughout her yard. In 2003, Janice was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which cut her teaching career short. She underwent a stem cell transplant in 2008 with stem cells donated by her brother Jason. Janice’s successful cure was a blessing to all those that loved her, and she used her experience to support other lymphoma patients through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada’s Peer Support Program. In honour of her experience, memorial donations may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, 2 Lansing Square, Suite 804, Toronto, ON M2J 4P8. Funeral Mass will be held at Resurrection R.C. Church, 3155 Windsor Park Road, Regina, SK on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. which will be livestreamed at https://livestream.com/accounts/17094656/events/7003667 To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.speersfuneralchapel.com
