Auntie Sophie was my favorite aunt. Her house was always warms and filled with love, and sometimes a couple of their beloved Huskies. I loved her laugh and how she and Norm would regale us with tales form their latest outdoor adventure in a canoe or RV.
In fact, they drove that huge RV to come visit my wife and I in NYC. We had a great time, seeing the sights and taking in a Broadway show.. Norm even helped me rig my aerial equipment at one of my aerial dance performances.
Sophie was super helpful with my mom, storing her belongings in their Quonset hut and helping care for her in later years.
Sophie was a sensitive soul who loved her sisters dearly, and she cried when Bernadette and I brought my mom to see her and Auntie Phyllis after Norman's funeral, the last time three of the four sisters were together.
A special early memory is of picking Saskatoon berries with Sophie and Grandma when we were very little. It was a hot summer day and she wanted to show us the special things that grew on her land and how to pick them. Our fingers were blue!
A recent fond memory is getting to walk into town with her, as she did so many times, and accompany her to her hair appointment. She had stories of the Decks and many of the folks in teh town. She was a big part of the Lumsden community and it was lovely to see her in her element.
She is missed dearly!

During the 80's and 90's, we experienced a number of wilderness canoe trips with Norm & Sophie. All of these trips were far from the conveniences and comforts of civilization and all involved challenging rivers and lakes. Many a time we were required to line canoes over rapids and traverse rough rocky river bottoms. Sophie faced particular challenges as she was terrified of water because she couldn't swim. Nonetheless, with Norman and the group's encouragement , "Shorty"(Norman's nickname for Sophie) would "soldier on" and overcome her fears. What a trooper she was!! How fondly remembered! She has reached her final destination and is once again with Norman.

I remember Kingarok, (Sophie and Norm’s house in Lumsden), as a safe place filled with love and quiet.I think about how much Sophie loved Norman, and how we would sit at the kitchen table and I would listen to their stories of their canoe and kayak trips and dog races and the like. I like how Sophie would talk about ‘Norman’s people’ and how special I felt to be part of Sophie and Norman’s people.
I remember how much Sophie loved us, how she never missed a birthday, and how she took care of my mom even though they could fight at times.
I remember the trailer, the two sets of stairs in the house that we ran up and down, picking berries in the bushes, walking through the orchard, petting the dogs in their pens, watching the blue jays fight over the peanuts that Auntie Sophie would put on the balcony, going to have lunch with Auntie Sophie when she was all dressed up in a suit and heels and a big chunky necklace when she worked at GM.
I still have the Sabatier knives that she gave me for a wedding gift (which have turned out to last longer than my marriage!), and I was so happy that her an Norm were there for my wedding. I think about them every time I use the knives.
I also quite vividly remember the familiy reunion at Kingarok - even though it was many years ago, and how nice to was to get to know the family better.
I love you Auntie Sohpie and have a place for you in my heart so that you will always stay with me.
