Obituary of Hansgeorg Schlichtmann
Schlichtmann, Hansgeorg
April 29, 1938 - May 31, 2020
Hans passed away unexpectedly after a short and aggressive illness. He was born in East Prussia and grew up in Hannover, West Germany. He studied Geography at the universities in Göttingen and Tübingen. After obtaining a doctoral degree from the University of Tübingen and then working for four years for a German Government agency, he accepted a teaching position from what was then the University of Saskatchewan Regina campus. He came to Regina in 1970, taught Geography and Cartography and quickly was promoted to the rank of full professor. Throughout his career, Hans was a teacher and a scholar with very high standards; always thorough and uncompromising. He was highly respected by his students as well as his colleagues. He retired from the University of Regina in 2005 and continued to work on his projects and publications. Hans is survived by his wife Ingeborg, his daughter Esther (Christian) and two grandchildren Nicholas and Brookelyn, all in Regina; as well as his sister Elisabeth and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces in Germany. Hans was a rather private man, not too fond of social gatherings. We have therefore decided not to hold a public funeral for him. We will celebrate his life within our family and will carry him in our hearts forever.
