Obituary of Gloria Jean Silcox

SILCOX, Gloria Jean (Michayluk)

(February 20, 1941 – July 23, 2020)

It is with sadness but thankfulness for her life, we announce the peaceful passing of Gloria Jean Silcox, July 23rd, 2020 at College Park II, Regina, SK.  This was her residence of 3 years where she enjoyed new friends, the activities, entertainment and freedom from responsibilities.  As her Progressive Non-Fluent Aphasia progressed, Gloria, needing more assistance, moved to the personal care floor at College Park II, following a fractured hip in February.  Here, a wheelchair became her “new wheels” and she continued to enjoy social contacts and activities.

Her Michayluk family in Sask, Man, Quebec, BC and Yukon, extend their heartfelt thanks to her “Regina Angels”, Doreen and Earl Silcox, Kelly Silcox, Sherry and Murray Klatt and family who have been there for Gloria every step along the way, before and during her journey with Aphasia.

Left to remember Gloria is her sister Vickie Balon of Saskatoon; nieces and nephews;  sisters-in-laws Anne and Janice Michayluk of Saskatoon, Gloria Michayluk of Courtenay, BC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Doreen Silcox of Regina, Lloyd and Norma Silcox of Calgary, and a large extended family and friends are left with fond memories of times spent together.

Predeceased by her loving husband Lynn, on February 19, 2001; parents Alex and Katherine Michayluk; sister Lesia; brothers, Wally, Ernie, Ron and Ed; sister-in-law Mildred Michayluk; Lynn’s parents Harold and Doris Silcox of Carlyle; and nephew Kirby Silcox of Regina.

Born in Wakaw, SK February 20, 1941, Gloria grew up on the family farm with four brothers and a sister, where many fond memories were created.

She graduated in 1962 as a Psychiatric Nurse at Brandon Mental Health Centre. While visiting her brother Ernie at The Pas MB, Gloria met her husband to be, Cst. Lynn Silcox.  After Lynn’s postings in the high Arctic, Gloria and Lynn were married Sept. 26, 1964 in Wakaw.  This was the beginning of her life as an RCMP wife, living in Ottawa, Whitehorse, Edmonton, Regina, and Winnipeg.  Gloria supported Lynn during his lengthy and distinguished RCMP career, affording them opportunities for many memorable experiences.  They travelled and loved to entertain.  Lynn’s retirement, in 1994 saw their return to Regina with winters as Snowbirds in Chandler, Arizona.  A friend from Ottawa days remembers the annual feast with all the traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve dishes which Gloria prepared.  After dinner, the guys retreated to the living room to “talk shop” while the gals danced in the kitchen!

Both Gloria and Lynn loved and thrived around youngsters.  The nieces and nephews hold precious memories of their love and generosity.

There was a space in her heart reserved for a very special nephew, her all time favourite golf partner, Kirby Silcox.  Should Kirby best her in a golf game it was ok.  Not so for other golfers!  Their bond was firm, his passing in 2018 left a void in her life.

Gloria and Lynn were committed supporters of Special Olympics and Friends of The RCMP Museum.  In 2008 Gloria became a Life Member of the Friends.  She volunteered with her church pastoral care visiting and out-reach programs.  She also volunteered at the RCMP Heritage Centre gift shop, often finding her with friends visiting Depot.

Gloria stayed in contact with the many friends she had made during their many postings.  Her Christmas mailing list was lengthy, as was her “must visit” list, during trips East or West.  She looked forward to annual Northern Night gatherings of retired RCMP friends once posted in the North.    Her cards, telephone chats and visits will be missed by many.

Thanks to all at College Park II where she was touched by the friendship of fellow residents and smiles of cheery staff and care givers.

“ There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved”

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gloria’s memory to “The Friends of the Mounted Police Museum”, 5907 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan Canada S4T 0P4.
