Obituary of Louis Frederick (Fred) Urschel

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather on January 28, 2021. Fred was born in Grenfell, SK on June 2, 1934. The family moved to Regina when he was small and he attended Albert School and Balfour Technical School. Fred took great pride in his work and had a 41-year career at SGI, retiring in 1993 as AVP Underwriting. Once retired, Fred enjoyed travel, reading and cheering on (and armchair coaching) the Blue Jays and Riders. He was ever hopeful the Jays would strengthen their pitching line up and began each season with great optimism. Fred always tried to give back and was active within First Presbyterian Church and the condo board for many years. His first priority was always his family and he especially loved attending the many activities of his four grandchildren. Fred was always their biggest supporter and proud of them all. He was a kind, generous man and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Fred was a gentle soul with a warm smile that drew you in and when he spoke with you, you felt like you were the most important person in the world. He always remembered personal details and made a point to check in and show that he cared and he will be deeply missed.  Fred was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Caroline; and siblings, John, Jack, Beth, Edith Schlamp, Tillie Haubrich, Ernie, Hank, and Elsie Beck. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 57 years, Elinor (Weir); daughters Barb (Peter) and Carol (Michael); and his precious grandchildren Olivia, Maren, Juliana and Holden. Fred is also survived by his sister Hilda Wiggins; brothers, Bill and Lorne (Corinne); sister-in-law Theresa Urschel; and many nieces and nephews.  The family wishes to thank the staff in Palliative Care at the Pasqua Hospital for their kindness and care the last few days.  Flowers are gratefully declined. Please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3X1 or the Regina Humane Society, Box 3143, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3G7. Due to COVID restrictions, a private family service will be held.
