To Jacqui's family and closest friends:
Please accept deep sympathy from everyone at the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and our warmest appreciation for all you have done to make her life wonderful, and to help her make the life of many others in Regina wonderful in turn. The accolades on these pages speak for themselves, and you are joined in mourning by so many of us. Jacqui lit up the room... or the concert hall.. with her presence and her brilliant smile. I loved the chance to chat with her at concerts, particularly once we got to know each other a bit and her clever wit could poke through her ever-gracious conversation.
At Jacqui's 96th birthday celebration, RSO Board member and Historian talked about the nearly 70-year connection between the Symphony and the Shumiatchers. Starting in the 1950's, the marvelous young couple attended concerts and provided support. Shumy joined the Board in 1960. It was a male-only group at that time but in 1964 Jacqui and 2 other women changed that. Both Schumiatchers were on the board for the next 12 years, and Shumy for a few more after that including several years as President.
The very popular Shumiatcher Pops series and many other key RSO events happened thanks to Jacqui and Shumy. They believed Regina was a great place to live and were right, because they helped make it so. Jacqui carried on and enhanced the work they did together. We are grateful, and Jacqui, you are missed!
In remembrance, appreciation and sorrow, Judy McCuskee, Chair of the Regina Symphony Board

Adieu Princesse

Aunt Jacqui, So gracious and lovely but always with a twinkle in your eye and a mischievous sense of humor. I have such fond memories of being with you and Shumy as a child, when our family visited Regina, Calgary and of course our beloved Lake O'Hara. You were full of color and life and an inspiration. Much love, Jean

Jacqui was a force. She was a regal beauty who embraced life and the arts. She has left an indelible mark on the Saskatchewan arts community and she will be missed so very much. Her drive and determination to put the arts at the top of her priorities was inspiring and there will hopefully be others who come forward to follow in her footsteps. Yes, Jacqui and Morris were extraordinary art patrons but Jacqui on her own leaves an example of strong women advocates and philanthropists for the arts. Jacqui was a patron of Marie’s work which was very meaningful to her. We will miss her welcoming smile, her grace and her unwavering energy to attend and support the community of artists in all disciplines she was so firmly connected to. XoxoxoDanny and Marie

Shumy was a brilliant lawyer, writer, philosopher. Jacqui was his friend, companion, support and the love of his life. She made his brilliance shine all that much brighter. When Shumy left us much too early she carried on the legacy the two of them had established and her own brilliance shone through. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed the warmth of that brilliance from both of them. Thanks.

Jacqui. Your smile lit up a room. Your kindness and generosity touched so many. Your support of artists and arts organizations made dreams come true. Your love and support of the arts brightened the cultural lives of people in Regina and Saskatchewan.
Your interest in and decades long support of SaskExpress, when I was Artistic Director, made so many things possible for this young people's theatre company.
You had a genuine interest in what these young performers were doing and how they were doing. Personally, your support, your advice and your friendship meant so much to me.
Now, you are united with your beloved husband, Morris. All is well.

Jacqui was one of those individuals you rarely have the privilege of meeting during your lifetime. Accomplished, intelligent, charming, witty, knowledgeable about so many things and always interested in the lives and activities of others. Her smile really said it all. Jacqui's love and passion for the arts has played a pivotal role in the development of the arts community in Regina over the past several decades. Jacqui, and her husband Morris, set a high standard for philanthropy in Regina which serves as an example to everyone in our community. She will be missed by so many.

I am so very sorry that the world has lost Dr Jacqui Shumiatcher. I knew her very briefly over the last five years. I saw her as a very generous Philanthropist who was great at storytelling, reminiscing and laughing. I can't think of anywhere that one may go in Regina where we wouldn't see or hear the the Shumiatcher name. She has left an incredible void but a very lasting incredible legacy. May you rest in peace.

We are so blessed to have had Jacqui in our lives. Jacqui was a remarkable conversationalist, always with something interesting to say and always interested in other people's lives and achievements. Above all, Jacqui loved Lake O’Hara in the Rockies, where she and Shumy, as he was known, would stay and bring me along when I was a teenager. Always devoted to Shumy, she was a partner in everything he did and a star in her own right. We will always cherish our memories of Jacqui’s warmth, spirit, generosity, wit, intelligence, and sparkling personality.—Ronald Kessler, Jacqui’s nephew
