To add to my last post: here is Norm’s old business card that he gave me in 2017 or so. I’ve never gotten rid of it. Card itself is a bit worse for wear, but I’m so glad that I’ve kept it!

I’m a bit late here - but I used to work in the Northgate Mall from 2016-2020. Norm would go for walks around the mall and make pit stops to tell some jokes to various employees before even introducing himself. Soon, he and I became good pals. We bonded over being Irish, he gave me heck for being American (which was valid), and we chatted about his respiratory technologist career, especially since my brother works in the field as well.
Today, I stumbled upon this photo taken exactly 5 years ago - June 8, 2019. After years of chatting in the store, I finally invited him to have lunch with me. I wish I had done it more often, but I’m so glad that I was able to commemorate this lovely food court lunch date.
This photo made me wonder “Where is he now?”, which has bittersweetly brought me to this page. Reading about his life has been beautiful, especially considering how much of it I heard from him. However, his humility has been incredibly eye-opening. For a man who made so much of an impact both personally and professionally, he carried himself like any other kind, Irish jokester.
I will miss you, Norm.

I was so sorry to hear of Norm’s passing. I have fond memories of his visits to the Humane Society to drop off donations to help the animals. He always came prepared with jokes to tell and stories to make us laugh - a great example of his kindness and caring for animals and people alike. My heartfelt sympathy to Norm’s family.

We were so sorry to hear about Norm's passing. My husband and I worked with Norm for many years as respiratory therapists at the Regina General Hospital. I think some of his greatest accomplishments were helping set up the Regina General Hospital Neonatal Transport Team and developing the equipment used by the team for many years.
Norm could never be accused of being politically correct. He just 'called em like he saw em'. He was always a force to be reckoned with and a champion of the little guy. Fellow therapists knew he was always keeping an eye on things and he held everyone to a very high standard. We therapists knew that if you did less than your best, Norm would make sure you did better next time.
We should thank Norm for his contribution to the healthcare system in southern Saskatchewan. To coin one of his often used phrases,''You were one of the good ones" Norm.
Sincerely,
Paula and Eugene Hugel

It's hard to say goodbye to a friend whether or not you have seen them recently. Norm is someone who has always been in my thoughts even after I moved to BC. We all know him for his compassion and dedication to the patients he served and the people that worked with him in the Respiratory Department. He set the bar high in each of the departments so that everyone knew that the patient came first. I think he was happiest when he was in the back room"tinkering" with a device that would make life easier for a small boy in ICU to have mobility so that he could spend moments in the sun even if he was being ventilated, for neonates that were fighting against all odds to live, or a man confined to a wheelchair so that he could live in a more home-like environment. That was him.
While he loved the work he did, he loved his family more. Arleen, he loved to tell me at lunch, at Nicky's, about your latest travels. He always talked about his "girls" and the grandkids. He was so proud of each and every one of you. He also loved his animals from his Great Pyrenees to his little Chihuahua-he would laugh about losing him in a snowbank. He also cared for his neighbours, shovelling their driveways and sidewalks if they were unable to do so. Having coffee with his friends and showing off his "Irish" cap were all things that were important to him.
That was him, too.
He will be missed. Remember the laughter he brought and the love he had for so many people. He is at peace now in another place, but he certainly left his mark on this one.
Goodbye my friend.

I have fond memories of Norm and I working at night to care for the premature babies with respiratory problems.
He would keep a friendly disposition in spite of the lack of sleep and challenges.
In those days we had to transport children out of province for very specialized care.
He taught me how to clean a respirator, taking it apart and putting it back together.
We worked as a team and became friends.
I will surely miss him.

I worked with Norm in 1979 when I was new to the city. He was one of the happiest people I have ever met. Each interaction with Him ended with a laugh. I would run into him over the next 43 years and he always remembered me , we would have a chat and end with a giggle. A truly good man.

I worked with Norm for many years in the Neonatal ICU. Norm was passionate about his work and always sought ways to improve the care provided to the patient. Norm truly was a leader in collaborative care between medicine, nursing and respiratory therapy. Rest In Peace, Norm.

I have no doubt you’ve gone to a great place Norman, just like you deserve. You’d have enjoyed your obit, including the addition of humour from your offspring.
I hope you’ve had the chance to discuss a few things with “The Big Guy”, like you always said you would. I’ll watch for positive changes, based on your input.
I can hear you saying, like you did so many times, “See ya, Stretch”.

So sorry to hear of Norm’s passing. I wanted to share my memory. It relates to our common interest in cars. When I pulled up he would walk around my car telling me all about the features. His hobby was cruising the car lots.
Rest In Peace., Norm.
