Obituary of Janice Kathleen Loos

Janice Kathleen Loos (nee Munn) was born on May 10, 1955 and passed away peacefully in palliative care at the Regina Pasqua Hospital on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the age of 65 years after a courageous year-long battle with cancer, while also navigating the COVID pandemic. Her family was nearby and her sister Merle Zatylny was by her side.

Janice was predeceased by her brothers Larry Munn and Ken Munn; brother-in-law David Zatylny; father David Munn, and mother Lois (Parker) Munn. She will be lovingly remembered by husband Jim Loos; her three children; Michael (Melissa) Loos, David (Kara) Loos, and Daniel Loos; five grandchildren; Beau, Adalynn and Bryndle (Michael), and Alice and Austin (David). Jan will also be missed by her brother Doug (Louise) Munn; sister Merle Zatylny; sister-in-law Sharen Munn; sister-in-law Bonnie (Terry) Whelpton; brother-in-law Alan Loos; brother-in-law Ron (Sheila) Loos; sister-in-law Nancy (Hans) Nelson; sister-in-law Patti (Ron) Costea; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Jan was born and raised in Cupar, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of 5 children: 3 boys and 2 girls born to Dave and Lois Munn. From an early age, just like her siblings, Jan helped in her dad’s hardware store. Her parents helped instill the values of helping your neighbour and just being kind to everyone, and those values stuck with her always. Jan loved and excelled at sports, competing in figure skating and badminton in her younger years, as well as fastball and curling, which she carried on into her adult years.

In 1977 she met her eventual husband Jim Loos and they dated for several years before getting married in August of 1980. Together they travelled around western Canada playing in ball tournaments with many great friends and shredding up the mountains in those skiing outfits everyone wore in the 80’s.

When the boys (Mike, Dave and Dan) started arriving, Jan and Jim traded in their decked out travelling van for another van with more seats, and continued to enjoy life travelling around playing ball, camping, skiing, and visiting family whenever work and life would allow. She was so proud of her boys (including Jim), making sure to always be out to support them for any sport or activity on the calendar, and by making sure that their butts looked good before buying any new pair of pants... “Lift up your shirt and turn around...”

Jan was so excited to finally have daughters as well, when Kara (Dave) and Melissa (Mike) both joined the family, and that excitement only grew when they helped to usher in the next generation of little Loos kids. Her five grandchildren have been the pride of her life since the first day she met them, and while their time with her was cut short, her memory and love will live on with them.

Jan spent 42 years of employment in Regina in and around maternity leave. Two employers of note were 11 years at Saskem Chemicals from 1975 to 1986, and then 25 years at Supreme Basics from 1994 to 2019, from which she retired in Sept 2019. She loved working at her jobs. In her 25 years at Supreme she made so many friends, and she loved being part of the social life and all the events that happened within that organization.

Above everything else, Jan seemed to exist to help others. It was no chore or burden for her. It felt like her purpose in life. Everyone she met felt the love and kindness that seemed to radiate off her. When Jan conversed with you, she was genuinely interested in what you had to say, and made you feel like the most important person in the world at that moment.

For many years, Jan acted as the primary caregiver for her amazing mother, Lois Munn, up until her passing in 2019 at the age of 98 years old. Just another in the long list of selfless acts over the course of Jan’s life. And while she may not have been ready to leave us just yet, she found peace in the belief that her parents, brothers and other loved ones would be ready to welcome her into the next stage of her journey.

Jan was an incredibly loving mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunty, and friend. Her family and friends are eternally grateful for the many years they got to spend learning how to be better people, watching Jan’s quiet strength, love, patience, and kindness. She loved her family beyond words. For anyone that knew Jan at all, just know that if she had the chance, despite everything she fought through in this past year, she would have loved to give you a hug to help ease any pain you might be dealing with. Jan was a powerful bright light in this world, and she passed that light on to everyone she knew. The world does not have to be a darker place because she is gone, so long as we all work to keep her light shining through us.

A private Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. For this celebration of life, the family hopes those in attendance do not feel obligated to wear black and wear the colours that bring them the most joy.
