Obituary of Alex Emil Stenzel
STENZEL, Alex Emil
1930 - 2021
Alex Stenzel, late of Avonlea, SK, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2021. He was predeceased by his parents Emil and Sophie Stenzel (nee Kosielski); brother Helmuth; and sister Rose. Alex is lovingly remembered by his three children and their spouses, Christine (Tim), Richard (Michelle) and Catherine (Cliff); and his grandchildren, whom he was known to as Opa, Joshua (Faith), Kimberly (Greg), Rachel (Geoffrey), Jonathon, Angela (Patrick), Sheldon, Laura (Dallas), Eric, Braden and Logan; and his great-granddaughters Emalee and Kenedy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ruth Stenzel; brother-in-law Herbert Langstein; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Alex was born in Lodz, Poland and was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church his family attended. He grew up in Lodz with his family until the war broke out and their lives changed forever. During the war, his family was split up. Miraculously after the war the family was reunited in Germany where Alex and Helmuth worked until the family immigrated to Canada with Alex arriving in Regina in 1952. Regina soon became home with the two brothers and their dad starting a construction company called Stenzel Brothers Building Contractors. Alex became a journeyman carpenter and he worked as a foreman or superintendent on big projects over the years; one notable project being the Pasqua Hospital in the 1980s. He was also a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for over 50 years. Alex also tried his hand at farming near Walkerton, Ontario for several years.
In 1957, he married Irma in Swift Current, SK and they had three children living in various provinces during their married life. Alex always enjoyed road trips travelling east or west to visit family and taking in the sights of Canada along the way including the wildlife. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. Alex enjoyed spending time with his family and particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play soccer. Alex enjoyed attending German church services at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in the last few years of his life. “Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” John 11:25-26
The family would like to thank the staff at Coteau Range Manor in Avonlea for the excellent care they gave Alex during the last four years of his life.
