To Tracey and the rest of Mike's family. It is heartbreaking to hear of Mike's passing. I worked for Mike for a number of years in the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. He had the most calm and professional demeanor of anyone that I had ever worked for. He was a great mentor and I so appreciated the wisdom he imparted on me. He had the most engaging smile and appreciated his great sense of humour. As you can see by the many posts, he impacted so many lives in such a positive way. What a wonderful legacy. You will be dearly missed.

I worked for over 15 years with Michael Higgins. He was the head of Alberta Health Association at the time and I found Michael to be an effective leader with a calm approach to all matters. He was a master at governance and and effective communicator. He was also a good friend.
Blessings to you Michael.

I was extremely privileged to work for Mike from 2000 to 2008 - my first meaningful consulting assignment. He was the supremely talented, highly detail oriented and always "grace under pressure" Executive Director of the Health Boards of Alberta (formerly Provincial Health Authorities of Alberta) in Edmonton.
Mike was an excellent mentor and advisor, always willing to share his expertise. I learned so much from him about leadership, consulting, staff engagement, strategy, organizational politics, human resources, "customer service" and many other areas.
Mike's personality and leadership shone through the organization, unlike any I've worked for or consulted to since 1977.
Thank you for taking a chance on me over two decades ago, Mike. Rest in peace.
My utmost condolences to Tracey and all of your extended family. What an honour to have known Mike.

I had the privilege of growing up with the Higgins family, by virtue of my wonderful life-long friendship with Michael’s sister Susan. Susan and I spent a lot of time together at each other’s houses and as a result I came to know Michael, David, Brian and Peter pretty well. As little girls, and ‘sometimes gigglers’, I think we often drove the boys crazy.. Memories of those early years are on the beach, waterskiing, playing golf and tennis and having great meals around the Higgins’ big dining table in Westfield.
While our paths didn’t cross much after the early years I loved seeing Michael and catching up. It was so great also hearing about his life, his kids and his career successes over the years. I am very sad Michael left you all too soon. I wish all of you heart felt condolences and wonderful memories of your beautiful brother / father / husband. Special love and hugs to my always friend Susan and her family.

Michaels was the most calm and composed person I had ever encountered. He was the CEO of the organization I work with and he made a difference during his time there. He would listen to everyone, he was funny and very empathetic. I am extremely sad to hear this news. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

I was taken aback when I heard the news of Mikes passing. His commitment to enjoying his retirement with Tracey and his family was as strong as his commitment to improving the health system. Knowing Mike he made the most of the time he did have in retirement but it is so unfair that he left Tracey and his family so soon after retirement. I had the pleasure of working with Mike at RQHR. He was a mentor and leader to many, including me, and his wise and thoughtful counsel was very much appreciated. In our office he was kindly referred to as Yoda. He was always there when needed and would not simply give you the solution but help you get to the solution. He made us all better.
Audrey and I would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to Tracey and the rest of Mike's family. Hopefully knowing how much we all loved and respected Mike will help them through this sad time.

I met Mike in 2012 in a line up at the Regina airport; We would be travelling together for work. I commented on how lightly he was packed for a one week trip, “did you forget your other suitcase” I asked, he chuckled, praised his wife’s packing skills and assured me that I would never see him in the same outfit twice!
Little did I know, that moment was the start of our very special relationship. From that day on, Mike took me under his giant, protective wing as my mentor and biggest cheerleader.
Mike spent endless hours coaching me, sharing stories and life lessons and most importantly, laughing with me. I loved every minute I got to spend with him and admired him so much. I trusted his guidance and his approval meant everything to me. He taught me patience, resilience, mindfulness and compassion. I am so grateful for our time together.
I saw him last at his retirement party. When I was leaving, he started to say “good bye”; I told him that I would never say “good bye” to him, only “see you later”. He chuckled and said “ok Amy, see you later”.
See you later, my friend.
My most deepest and heartfelt condolences to Mike’s family and all those that loved him. I share your sadness and am sending peace and light your way during this very sad time.

My wife and I both worked with Mike when he was the CEO of the Provincial Health Authorities of Alberta (PHAA). Mike was always calm and pragmatic. It was a challenging time to work in Labour Relations and he provided insightful leadership to our organization and to the industry. He cared deeply about employees and pioneered a number of innovative programs related to staff wellness and engagement. We will always remember him as a warm, engaging leader with a great sense of humour. Tracey and family - our deepest condolences; you are in our thoughts and prayers. I am profoundly sad to hear of this news. I worked with Mike for several years at RQHR in Regina and always looked to him as a father figure- and told him as much. I especially admired him in these last few years when he picked up biking. Our chats will be so missed. Condolences to all those that knew and loved him- this big teddy bear loved you right back.
