Gloria Alcantara Mirza, chemist, mother, wife, friend and honorary Ninang to many, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday September 28, 2021. She was 85.
Gloria was the second child of Isabello and Maria Alcantara of Bolbok, Batangas City Philippines. A trailblazer of her generation, she completed a double degree in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Mapua Institute of Technology. Her first job was at the RECCO television company where she developed process protocols for large scale television manufacturing. In search of adventure she immigrated to Canada in the early 1970’s and eventually found her way to Lanigan Saskatchewan where she worked for over 20 years as a laboratory technician for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan.
Although she was very happy with her job, the local ladies auxiliary sensed she could benefit from a companion and introduced her to Irshad Mirza whom she married in 1975 and together they cultivated a house full of love where she was mom to Akhtar, Qanta, Ishaq and Ahmad. Ever hospitable, the family home was a welcome landing pad for countless siblings, nephews, nieces and friends from the Philippines and Pakistan looking to start a new life in Canada.
Gloria was predeceased by her brothers Reynaldo and Armando as well as younger sister Norma. She is survived by her sister Consuelo and brother Carlos. Always graceful, she will be remembered for her love of song, her Filipino-Pakistani fusion cuisine, a work ethic that somehow put 30 hours of work into a 24 hour day and above all an unshakable dedication to her faith.
