I have only just found out about Jan's passing and it makes me sad to think that she is gone. She was a good friend and we met about 40 years ago. Over the years we crossed paths often. And her hooking talents were really amazing!! I supplied her with several landscape photographs which she then turned into a beautiful wall hanging. And yes, her storage closet was immaculate.
I am so sorry that she had to suffer like that in the end.
May she rest in peace now, together with Harold.
My heartfelt condolences to her family and children.

Our family is truly saddened by Jans passing. We have known Jan and Harry for the past 42 years. There are far to many memories to relay here but one of my favorites is of the day we were all at my Dads visiting when a storm rolled in. Jan did not care for lightning and did not care for the fact that I was sitting outside in a lawn chair trying to photograph the lighting. I went in when the rain hit and she gave me what for.
When my son was a toddler he spent many hours at Jan and Harrys being fed black licorice. The consequences of black licorice are well known but it took me a while to finally figure out what was happening.
Jan and I had our hand work in common over the years but when she took up hooking she took it to the max. The day she showed me her storage closet was the day I really new supply envy. Her work was amazing and her patience showed in every piece she made. I took her to Fort Qu"Appelle one year a while back. She wanted to see the original old Bay building in town and take pictures. She eventually turned those photos into a hooked rug. It really is a beautiful piece.
I'm sad to say that we had not seen Jan or Harry in the passed 2 years since Covid-19 hit. I had consciously stayed away so as not to put them at risk as I have been working a great deal in the public. Our Son got to see them a couple of times as he was Jans part time tech support for her computer once my own Dad, Russ Renwick, passed in 2017 .
We all have wonderful memories of Jan and Harry and our many years of friendship. They are and will be very much missed.

Dear Roxanne, I enjoyed reading about your times with Jan and Harry and laughed about the lightning and licorice. And I agree, her hooking closet gave me supply envy too, especially as she had it so wonderfully organized. Thank you so much for sharing and for your condolences. Your father was a dear friend of theirs and they always appreciated his tech support too. How sweet that Drew picked it up from there. Feeling grateful she had people like you in her life.

It was with great sadness that I heard the news of Jan’s passing. I remember Jan fondly from the times she visited her youngest daughter, Dana, when we lived together in Calgary.
I have memories of spending languid time with Jan over cups of tea, just chatting about this and that. Jan was a great conversationalist because she had a deep curiosity about things – both people and the world they inhabited. She was good company.
Jan was a very talented artist and her hooked rug creations were amazing. She was extremely proud of Dana, who shares her artist soul.
My deep condolences to the many whose lives and hearts she touched

Dearest Nancy, it means a lot to me to receive your love and support during this heartbreaking outcome. Knowing we will loose our parents one day does not mean we will know what it will feel like when that day arrives. As tough as it is, it would be unbearable without the strength that our good memories can provide. Thank you for taking the time to share your memory of her visits to Calgary. She thought us both kooky and it made her laugh.

I am so sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. I saw her this past August and we had a lovely visit. I worked with Jan at Eaton’s, Sears and The Bay for many years. We shared many crafting interests and the love of cosmetics and fragrances. Both Jan and Harold knew my Dad (George Allan from Marler Shoes) very well. I remember well Jan’s love of eye glasses and she loved to have the most beautiful stylish frames which always complimented her hair style. She was a hard worker for sure and would get so excited about her daily sales. She was an excellent saleswoman and always knew her product very well. I will always have many fond memories of her. My deepest condolences to her family.

Hi Donna, thank you kindly for your condolences and sharing your memories of our mom. Her stylish frames were certainly a big part of her signature style, we loved them on her too. I’m glad she was able to visit with you in August. I’m sure your friendship meant a lot to her. It eases some of our pain over her loss as we learn more about the positive impact she had on others. Thank you.

I sat beside Jan at Blackstrap Lake during my first rug hooking school. She was very kind and welcoming, even sending me a card thereafter. I also sat beside her at her last time of attendance at Prairie Harvest Rug Hooking School in Edmonton; she gave me a penny mat that I have under a lamp on the table where I cut strips which reminds me of her. She did beautiful work and was a fine person.

I am so so sorry to hear of Jan’s death. My condolences to her families here and in Ontario and her relatives scattered across the globe. Jan was my rug hooking mentor and helped me design and dye the wool for my first major project. She had a special touch with choosing and making colours. We had to dye some more of one colour and it didn’t come out right. She was so puzzled and then discovered she had the wrong lid on one dye we used! We also enjoyed the long drives together to Prairie Harvest Rug Hooking School (PHRHS) held in Edmonton. Time passed quickly! On one trip we stopped at the Allen Sapp gallery in North Battleford; on another we had packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed the outdoors. However, on our last journey, she was in major pain and we slipped out of school to visit a pharmacy. That trip was long for her. We met at PHRHS the last time it was held in SK. A gallery of rugs had just been put on display. I was admiring a rug and I said it looked like a painting. Jan said, Thank you! That is one of mine!) It turned out she was from Regina and very happy to take me under her wing and share her knowledge and skills. She always reminded me to take care to finish the edges and back of the rug well. Jan and I shared another interest, that of genealogy. She was so tickled to connect with then meet her brother and his family. She had hooked Inukshuks to represent family; she gave her brother one and a niece too, I think. She spoke of a relative in Australia and relatives in Texas. She received a major resource with photos from a relative in the UK. Finding family was so very important to Jan given so many unknowns in her early years. Her own children and grandchildren were so important to her. She showed me her photo album of rugs she had hooked that included rugs for her grandchildren and rugs that her family wanted so she wouldn’t sell them. She spoke of one son who purchased rugs from her also. Jan was proud of all her rugs and remembered their stories; she was self taught initially. She usually used a finer cut width of wool that made more and sharper details. Her rugs were well designed and made, and many sold. She also gifted some rugs of historic buildings to at least two local SK communities. Her output was astounding. She did four major rugs including two dresser tops and two floor rugs while I made one 7x9” in my first year! Jan could read her market. Recently she made smaller projects where she didn’t need to sit so long and that she could sell at her retirement home. If you are able to share my email address and message with the family, please do so. I will miss Jan but as you can read, I have so many fine memories of our times together. I hope that you too will carry Jan in your heart in the memories you have. Sincerely, Shirley

Dear Shirley, it was so nice to hear your stories about our mom. I remember her telling me about those road trips and how much she enjoyed them, and her time with you and at the school. Thank you for your compassion and thoughtfulness. Her rugs are displayed throughout all our homes and being able to run my hands across her work, knowing her loving hands brought them to life, brings me more comfort than I ever could have imagined.
