I never had Rick as a teacher, but knew him at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus (as it was then known) from '72 to '74 as an M.A, student, and then again in '75-6 when I taught there for a year. He was a warm, witty, friendly man, generous with everyone. And man, could he play "Boticcelli" (a general knowledge game at which he excelled -- he knew everything)! He made the Department a congenial place for everyone. Lovely man.

Rick was my instructor for English 100 at The USRC in 1969. He was, indeed, a very good teacher.

When I last chatted with Rick in November, we ended up discussing the turkey dinner he and Colleen had prepared years ago for a large group of family members. We couldn't remember all the side dishes that we enjoyed but I remembered the rich turkey dressing he had made. I made the comment that it must have included almost a pound of butter. Rick chuckled and responded, "That would be about right!"

As much as he loved cooking with home grown pepper flakes, he equally disliked grinding them in the peppers only coffee grinder. Photo is of Rick in action with dried hot peppers. He eventually put on "safety goggles" too. They kept the fine but spicy dust out of his eyes.

Rick was an inspiring teacher, sage mentor, and generous friend to me. His class on Jonathan Swift was all the more memorable and palatable because of the gourmet delights he served his students. His direction of Sheridan's School for Scandal performed at Darke Hall was among the best RLT plays I have ever witnessed. And his wisdom about the imperfectibility of mankind has helped me to avoid many disappointments in life. I shall miss him dearly.
