Obituary of Maria Anna Stromich

Maria Anna Stromich (nee: Kupczik) passed away peacefully Saturday, February 12, 2022 in Regina General Hospital after a brief illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband Edmund Stromich, her parents Johann and Anna Kupczik, brother Hans Kupczik and sister Hilda Pieracci.   Maria will be loved and remembered by her children John (Susan), Kathy (Denton), and Susan (Steven); as well as her beloved grandchildren Jocelyn (Julian) and Regan (Anand).

Maria was born in Nassiedel, Schlesien (current-day Poland) on September 10, 1931.  Post war, she relocated to West Germany and settled in Stuttgart with her sister, where she worked in a surgical clinic and later for the Red Cross. In 1953 she immigrated to Canada and joined her brother Hans in Regina, Saskatchewan, obtaining employment at the Grey Nun’s Hospital.   In 1955, she married Edmund Stromich and they started their family together.  She and dad loved to travel and travelled extensively throughout Canada, the United States and Germany.  Las Vegas was always a favorite destination as mom always loved to lose a little money at the slot machines.  She enjoyed socializing with friends, especially over a good game of cards or a game of bingo at the church hall.  Maria was an avid knitter and crocheter as the many doilies in the house attest to and enjoyed her German crossword puzzles and a good movie, especially a western or an action movie.   She tended her garden every summer and was always proud of her tomatoes, yellow beans and flowers.  Maria enjoyed cooking, especially baking, and looked forward to large family meals on special occasions such as holidays and birthdays when she would produce elaborate birthday cakes for the family.  

In her later years, mom suffered from many medical challenges but she remained upbeat and optimistic throughout.  In September 2021, on her 90^th birthday, a celebration with family was held in her honor.  Her only wish was to have “a good steak”.   Mom was a gentle and kind soul and she will be loved and missed by all who knew her.   

The family would like to acknowledge the staff of College Park I Retirement Residence for the care they provided mom during her time in residence.  And we would also like to extend special thanks to the doctors and nurses of Regina General Hospital Ward 5E who provided such compassionate care to mom during her illness.

A private family memorial service will be held.   Flowers gratefully declined.
