Obituary of Ida Hustak

The family of Ida Mary Ann Hustak is deeply saddened to announce the passing of their mother on March 18, 2022, at the age of 90.

Ida was born to Alex and Mary Anne (Pinke) Shivak on February 27,1932, on the family farm located one mile west of Stockholm, Saskatchewan. She was the sixth of seven children and was very close to her brothers and sisters. Ida attended the local Catholic school where she also made many lifelong friends.

On July 3, 1951, Ida married William Hustak at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church. The couple enjoyed farming in the Stockholm area for forty-three years. In 1994, Ida and William decided to retire in Esterhazy and continued to enjoy the company of friends and relatives. William passed away in 1997, and eventually, Ida decided to move to Regina in 2012 to be closer to her children.

Ida was a very loving mother and grandmother. She was blessed with six children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. With a warm smile on her face, you would often hear mom and grandma say, “It is so good to see you.” and “I love you so much.” She created countless fond memories for her children and grandchildren to treasure forever.

Ida was known for being hospitable and she enjoyed having friends and relatives in her home. One of her favourite pastimes was playing card games around the kitchen table and having a delicious lunch afterwards. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed dancing, curling, travelling, gardening and baking.

Ida’s Hungarian heritage was very important to her. She fluently spoke both Hungarian and English, and later in life, she travelled to Hungary with her sister, Kathleen. Ida often prepared delicious paprikash cream chicken and dumplings, palacsinta (crepes), and cabbage rolls for her family. Her children’s and grandchildren’s favourites were raised donuts, poppy seed buns, tortes, saskatoon pies, and retes (apple strudel). Ida’s freshly baked bread with saskatoon-rhubarb jam was a special treat for everyone.

Ida was an active participant in the Catholic faith. She valued attending weekly masses, being part of the CWL, singing in the adult choir, and volunteering at various church events. Mom often reminded her children that she was praying for them. Her legacy of warmth, kindness, and compassion will live on in those she loved so well.

Mom and grandma will be dearly missed by her children: Mark (Merle), Myron (Liana), Lorne (Claudette), Tim, Charmaine and Kim; her grandchildren: Jonathan (Karen), Jared (Lola), Joel, Matthew, Erica (Andrew), and Nolan (Crystal): her great-grandchildren: Grayson, Jules, Rita, and Zebyn.

Ida is survived by her brother, Donald (Marlene) as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William; her parents, Alex and Mary Anne; her sisters, Irene, Kathleen, and Ethel; her brothers, Joe and Alex; and many sisters and brothers-in-law.

A Private Funeral Service will be held in Speers Funeral Chapel, Regina, on Friday, March 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. To view the livestream of the service, please click on the link above.  Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Stockholm, SK.
