Obituary of Linda Diane Young

Linda Diane Young (nee Bennett) of Regina passed away peacefully March 27, 2022 at the age of 77 years. Linda is survived by her siblings Bill (Muriel), Wayne (Cecile), Susan (Chiko) and Dean; by her children Jon, Joanna (Brij) and Peter; by her grandchildren Samir, Kyle, Shaan, Erika and Addy; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt: mom was all these to our family. Who she was as a person extended well past that and touched many lives; as a teacher, an artist, a musician, an antique enthusiast, a gardener, a volunteer, and a friend.

Mom was a great teacher with an amazing heart. She was always caring, and put her teachings and students first. After more than a decade of working as a substitute elementary teacher, Linda combined her love of young children and teaching into her pre-school “Mother’s Day Out.” Through play, art and music, she helped hundreds of children begin their elementary education on a sound footing.

Mom was a talented artist who worked with numerous mediums: watercolour, oils, charcoal, pencil and needlepoint. She enjoyed painting scenes from nature and was gifted when it came to painting flowers. Her passion for antique furniture was another outlet for mom’s creativity. Mom had a keen eye for spotting diamonds in the rough, and the skill to refinish and restore the antiques so she could proudly display them.

Mom was an avid gardener and loved spending time tending to her plants. Pete’s love of gardening stems from helping mom start the tomatoes early, sew rows of lettuce, swiss chard, and carrots, and from helping her nurture the plants through to harvest. Through these hands on teachings, Pete learned the importance of caring for the flora, and the abundance of food a healthy garden can provide a family.

Mom enjoyed being physically active from the time she was able to walk. She loved being in or near the water in the summer: if we weren’t headed to Buena Vista for a summer day at the beach followed by fish and chips at Butler’s, it was off to Massey or Wascana pool. Mom always made sure we were in swimming or diving lessons every summer, to keep us occupied and learning.

Mom (and Dad) taught us to be good citizens, to have compassion for others, to volunteer and give back, to be responsible and independent. We’ll miss you mom; now it’s your time to be with dad. All our love,

A celebration of Linda’s life will be held, date yet to be determined. Donations in memoriam or in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan.
