Obituary of Dorothy Grace Allan

With deep sorrow, we would like to announce the sunset of our mom, Dorothy Grace Allan, on April 13, 2022, at the age of 97. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, George John Allan in 2013. She was also predeceased by parents Ida and George Collins; brothers Robert and Maurice Collins; and sister Helen Gracey.

 Leaving to mourn are her three children, Donna (Ian) Roach, Jack Allan and Lorraine (Kevin) Punshon; grandchildren, Christy Sanson, Craig (Mariel) Roach, Amanda (Peter) LePiane, Andrew (Natalie) Allan, Alex (Esther) Allan, Sarah (Brady) Punshon and Jeffrey (Haley) Punshon; and four great-grandchildren, Tesla, Carter, Griffin, and Colin.

 Dorothy was born in Piapot, Saskatchewan on August 7, 1924. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Regina where she grew up on the 800 block of Victoria Avenue. Although Dorothy grew up during the depression, she always talked about her childhood with happy reflection. Many fond memories were shared in this vibrant neighbourhood filled with many special, lifelong friends. Dorothy enjoyed sharing how in the summer, she would walk down Victoria Ave. to Wascana Park and in the winter she loved to skate with friends. Many of her dates were spent picnicking in Wascana Park in front of the Legislative Building. After attending Wetmore School and Balfour Collegiate, Dorothy was recommended by her typing teacher for a job at the Dominion Bank downtown. She loved that job and took great pride in the hard work of banking life. During the early 40s, the vibrancy of downtown Regina was “so much fun” she would say. On payday, Dorothy would enjoy great shops and restaurants, and time spent socializing with her coworkers. Unfortunately, WWII broke out and like many, she suffered great loss of love during this incredibly difficult time.

Dorothy married George John Allan on May 17, 1947. She always said he was “the most handsome man she’d ever seen”. Together, with very little, they created a life through hard work, grit, and determination. George worked for Marler Shoes Ltd. on 11th Avenue. After being offered the chance to buy into the company, he and Dorothy became a great team. Once they were complete owners, George ran the business and she managed the books.

Dorothy and George spent many years going to Arizona and Palm Springs. They enjoyed golf and Dorothy spent many years as a member of the Lakeview Par 3 Ladies Golf Group where she met many good friends. She was also a lifelong member of the Rebekahs.

Dorothy loved hearing whatever the latest news was of her grandkids and was proud of all their accomplishments. After George’s passing, she lived in Wintergreene Estates for 10 years, remaining independent almost to the end.

Dorothy loved red carnations, chocolate, books, word search puzzles, the Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell, gospel music, and getting new clothes. She loved talking about money, current events (especially politics) and always had an informed opinion.
