The light of the earth dimmed ever so on Sunday, July 3, 2022, as the spirit of Giovannina “Nina” Carani was set free. Left to mourn the loss of our Mom, Nonna and friend are her children, son Lorenzo (Susan) and daughter Loredana (Trevor); grandchildren Bishop, Luca, Jett and Chiara; sister Clara (Arnaldo) Landi; sisters-in-law Pia (Ido) Fiori, Eni Carani and Diva Carani; close friends Kelly Warden and Darlene McKay; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Ivo Carani; infant daughter Claudia; sister Mary Giovannetti; sister-in-law Eva Palandri; brothers-in-law Guiseppe Barsanti, Aldo Palandri, Silvano Carani and Lido Giovannetti; as well as nephew Bob Fiori. Nina was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy to parents Igo and Mistica Martinelli on November 10, 1941, and she grew up in the hamlet of Montefegatesi situated in the Apennine Mountains. After marrying Ivo on February 28, 1959, they immigrated to Regina, SK. Nina spent her life devoted to her family. Even though Mom worked full time she always managed to put together a homemade meal each evening for supper. Her generosity knew no limits as she was constantly preparing lasagna, tortellini, cannelloni, bread, perogies, cabbage rolls, cinnamon buns, or cookies for her family to “pick up after work”. Nina had a love for gardening especially growing tomatoes to ensure we had enough “conserva” to make it through winter. She was fiercely independent; the embodiment of the “side hustle” back in the 60s and 70s as she worked tirelessly to provide for her family. A special thank you to Palliative Home Care so Mom could spend her final days at home and to Dr. David Warden for all the years he cared for Mom as if she were family. Mom, I had the time of my life with you. I hope you did too. An iron will, knees of titanium and heart of gold, that’s our Nina. A Funeral Mass will be held for Nina at Christ the King, on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Riverside.
