It is so sad to learn the demise of my good friend Dr. Robert Macdonald, two years after his burial!! I got to know him when I was a Geology student at the Department of Geology, Makerere University. As students, we cherished him so much, having started this Department in 1968. When I joined the Department of Geological Surveys and Mines in 2002, I read a lot of his geological mapping reports of his works in Northeast and Northwest of Uganda. In 1967, he compiled the first Geology map of Uganda while working at the Geological Survey Department that was used until 2012 when a new geology map was published. He started the Geological Society of Uganda (GSU) and when he came back to Uganda in 2010, he edited its logo!
In 2010, I had a golden chance to meet him and made several geo-traverses across Uganda while gathering geoinformation in preparation to write the book about the geology of Uganda. During the same visit, he too gave a public lecture at Makerere University, Kampala on "The rise of Geoscience in Uganda" of which I personally coordinated.
I had an opportunity to meet and interact with family that time as they proceeded to the beautiful Fort portal City for their holidays. One of his daughters, Anna we are of same age!
I learnt a lot from him especially on the geology of Uganda and I will never forget his kindness, strong memory, sense of humour and above all his professionalism.
Dr. Macdonald, Uganda will ever remember you!!
Rest in Peace Bob; till we meet!!

Dear Marilyn, Anna & Rick, Carlos, Julian & Rosie, and families; Bob's wide-ranging, unending curiosity, genuine hospitality, and quick intelligence lives on in his family. His many friends will continue to feel his influence. I send back one of his hugs and laughs in sympathy for your loss. How we laughed as he recounted flying off post-graduation to his first posting in Uganda, and discovering his dad's car keys in his pocket, after driving his parents to the airport for their goodbyes. Much love, Michelle Ramaekers

Thank you for making the lovely memorial service available on-line. My condolences to the entire family. Bob was a wonderful individual and always positive. Whether it was singing with him, or going for breakfast with a group from the Philharmonic, and occasional guests, he was always very interesting. Discussions included geology, politics, religion, music, Africa, health, hybrid cars, history, and much more – never a dull moment. He will indeed be missed.

I have fond and happy memories of Dr. McDonald participating in the traditional Baganda dance at my wedding. As is customary for Ugandan Canadians, we request all community members to dance and drum and pull innocent bystanders from the crowd. Dr. McDonald's enthusiasm and vigour helped my husband's Ukrainian, German and British relatives feel at ease as they were forced onto the dance floor.
Thank you, Bob for always insisting that we start every conversation speaking in Luganda. The stories of your adventures in Uganda always made me smile and helped me feel connected to my roots!

I write this personally but also as a member of the Ugandan community to which Bob was a past president that I succeeded. I was Vice President to Bob and I can say that the Ugandan association benefitted enormously from his leadership skills and sense of humour. Bob was really Ugandan at heart. We celebrate his contribution to Ugandan and East African Geology, and for being such a human being. May the family find peace and comfort in knowing that Bob was loved by a lot of people, and that he really did the things that he loved and was an achiever.
Rest In Peace Bob.

Marilyn and family, we grieve with you at the loss of Bob, whom we called, if you recall, “the old Anglican”, but always
with the greatest affections. My, how he loved life, enjoyed a good laugh, and always an encourager to us. You will
miss him, we know. We will pray that you will know the comfort of our wonderful Lord.
