What a lovely tribute to an amazing individual. I remember her as a professor, a colleague, and a neighbour. She played so many diverse roles with such grace. I wish I could have shared in the celebration of her life last Friday. Please know that I was there in spirit. And remember, a little bit of her lives on in you. When in Paris I always think of Ellen--she loved the city so. She was also a generous giver of beautiful gifts. it just happens that I am in Paris now; the attached photo was taken yesterday in the Jardins du Luxembourg, one of her favourite spots. I'm wearing a scarf given to me by Ellen. Rest in peace, chère amie.

Bill and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know Ellen personally, but feel a kinship to her as the current University Secretary at UofR. I also giggled a bit about her doting over a variety of cats, and will share that my family is reaping the benefit of the attention and love paid to Stanley and Angus, who we continue to very much enjoy since their adoption into our home. My heart goes out to all of Ellen’s family. Ellen was such a warm and kind person and I remember her well from my time at the U of R Library. She always made time for a visit and was a thoughtful advisor. I appreciated her time, insights, and her sense of humour. I am so sorry that Alzheimer’s took her beautiful mind and cut her life short. Keeping your family in my thoughts.

Ellen was one of my favourite professors and I recall her enthusiasm, kindness, and brilliance. When I later taught at the university we became friends and bonded over our love of France and cats! She was an amazing lady and a style icon.
