Obituary of Bruce Jones

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and great-uncle, Ira Bruce Jones.  Bruce passed away peacefully on January 22, 2023, at the age of 87.  He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Deena, his parents, siblings and son-in-law.  He leaves behind his three children, Colin (Dorrie), Nancy and Susan; his partner of 10 years, Shirley; his grandchildren, Amy, Matthew, Amanda (Marshall), Joshua (Diana), Jeremy, Emily (Mark), Aaron (Kassandra), Nicholas and Olivia; many great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Karen (Eugene) and several nieces and nephews.

Bruce was born in Regina on February 9, 1935 and lived most of his life in Riceton.  After completing grade 11, he attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. When he returned to Riceton, he married Deena and they had three children.  He eventually built the house at the farm where he raised his family.  He continued to farm there with Colin until this past year.

Bruce met his future wife, Deena, in high school at choir practice. She was the daughter of the new minister. They continued to date while Bruce attended the U of S to take a two-year agriculture course. Returning to Riceton, Bruce and Deena married on October 4, 1958. Bruce and Deena enjoyed camping and travelling for years and shared many adventures. Bruce liked to explore and sometimes got into some sticky situations, much to Deena's dismay. They were always taking their children somewhere new to explore. After Deena's passing, Bruce connected with Shirley, and they continued travelling and camping. They both cherished their time together and created many good memories.

Bruce rarely sat still. His creative mind, many talents and capable hands always kept him busy when he wasn’t in the field. Bruce had a passion for music, wood working, model trains, and RC planes. When he wasn’t busy farming, he could be found working on a project in his shop, tinkering with his model trains and planes or learning a new song on his guitar.  He was like a big kid.  He loved playing with his grandkids, telling silly jokes and hosting wiener roasts at the farm. He loved sports, especially baseball. There was always a ballgame or hockey game on TV after supper.  

Bruce was well-known in the Riceton community. He was involved with the United Church, the Credit Union, Wheat Pool, the History Book Committee and coached sports in his earlier years. His ingenuity, enthusiasm to learn and care for others leaves his family and those who knew him with great memories and a desire to continue his legacy.

We want to thank his caregivers at Pioneer Village TCU and the Pasqua Hospital, who cared for him during his time there.

Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 4:30 p.m.
