Obituary of Norma Leona Thomson

It is with great sadness that her loving family announces the peaceful passing of Norma Leona Thomson on Thursday, January 27, 2023 at the age of 100 years. She is survived by her sons Bill (Dianne) Thomson of Regina and Ron Thomson of Calgary; granddaughters, Lindsay/Trevor Samson of Regina, Emily Thomson of Regina, Jamie Provost of Calgary, Stephanie/Dusty Sawa of Kelowna, Kara of Calgary; great-grandchildren, Jason, Kristen, Mason, Jessica, Sadie, Moira and Claire; sister-in-law Mary Danielson of Archerwill; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Beattie Thomson; parents Jalmer and Alphine Danielson; brother/sister-in-law Orville/Hattie Danielson; brother Harvey Danielson; sister/brother-in- law Violet/Fred Thirsk; and sister/brother-in-law Arlene/Al Bicknell.

Norma was born in Archerwill, SK. She grew up on the farm that her family homesteaded after moving to the Dahlton area in 1915 where she also attended the one room school. At the age of 17, Norma made a brave move to Saskatoon and started work at a manufacturing facility. Shortly after she moved to Regina to work as a secretary at the legislature and then later as a secretary in the Regina Court House for the provincial government. A simple valentine she sent to a young man to have a coffee, sparked a friendship that grew into a loving marriage of 53 years with husband Beattie. They married in 1951 and began to raise their family. After retiring they purchased a cottage at Regina Beach where they enjoyed many wonderful times with their friends and family. They had many visits and good times with Beattie's sister Marg and husband Bob and their family who also had a cottage nearby. Norma and Beattie enjoyed overseas vacations to Europe and Hawaii and spent many memorable winter holidays in Las Vegas and Mesa, where they met many new friends.

In her younger days, Norma enjoyed fishing at the lake and golfing at the beach. She later regularly played golf with neighbourhood friends at the Lakeview Par Three. Norma loved to garden and her home was always filled with plants and flowers that brought her joy. She was an avid card player and played bridge into her 90’s and continued to play cribbage with her sons Bill and Ron even after she turned 100. Norma was so happy to see and hear from all the family and friends that were able to visit and reach out to her for her 100th birthday celebration. She was very independent, living at her home on Lakeview, Rainbow Towers, the Bentley and was still living independently at College Park II up until this last December.  She loved our regular family brunches and suppers where she could have another chance to visit with us.

Norma was easy going, always trying to look on the positive side of things with her own unique sense of humour. She always seemed to be more interested in how others were doing than herself and was always ready with her smile and her support if someone needed cheering up. Norma was a caring, generous and a loving mother, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and special to all those that knew her. 

Our hearts broke a little that day...but I think it was supposed to be that way...

We will miss her and remember her with love, always.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Pasqua, General Hospital, and College Park II and special thanks to the staff of Princess Villa Senior Home for their kindness and care of Norma.

Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Park and a private family service will be held at a later date.
