Dearest Gaye and Family,
I was deeply saddened when I heard the news that Walt departed so suddenly. He is the one I need to thank for introducing Malaysia into my world. It was not on my radar but Mont’Kiara International School became nine amazing years of my life.
My first memory of Walt was at the intense job fair in Cambridge, Massachusetts during a snow storm. So many interviews with so many schools with so many questions and notes to sift through, coupled with the miserable weather outside, left my head spinning. By the tenth school I think I literally went blank in the middle of an interview—I did not share this anecdote with Walt!
But Walt made the first meeting relaxed and enjoyable. That was his style. Then at the second meeting is when he asks the hard pedagogical questions. Then after hiring us, he invited us to a “welcome aboard” breakfast. I suppose breaking bread together is meant to break the ice after all the “serious stuff” but all I could think of was, “Oh my gosh, now I must dress up again and eat my muffin professionally with a knife and fork!”
Upon arriving to Malaysia, Walt personally picked us up from the airport and he and Gaye took us to dinner at their favorite place--a humble little outdoor restaurant in Desa Sri Hartamas. (this place sadly no longer exists. It became Naughty Nuri's for a while) Other directors of school do not do this; it’s below their pay grade. But Walt did this because he genuinely enjoyed his role and genuinely cared about his teachers. His effort made for such a warm welcome to a new country, new climate, new school. This time, perhaps due to the warm Malaysian weather, I was not as nervous eating in front of my new boss…
Finally, my last memory was when we had some unpleasant personal news to share with him. We made an appointment to meet in his office. Again, Walt was warm, compassionate and professional. Moreover, he was able to empathize and acknowledge how difficult a decision it was for us. I can’t express how much I appreciated him for his sensitivity.
I have the utmost respect for Walt. I enjoyed reading the family’s beautiful memories in his obituary. He was such an outstanding leader to the teachers in our school, I can only imagine how amazing he was as a husband, father, grandfather to his family.
Gaye, I send you my deepest condolences. You are all in my prayers.
Walt, you are missed by everyone. But I feel comforted knowing that heaven has gained an angel.
With warmest regards,
Maria Leung

When we first met Walt in 2010 at Mont’ Kiara International School, he was down to earth, caring and concern individual. We will always remember him spending time chatting with the Elementary School children during lunch time in the cafeteria. Connie and her team will always remember his favorite clear soup noodle and fresh lime juice. Our deepest condolences to you all.

I have only heard about Walt's passing within the past couple of days. It saddened me greatly. I had the great fortune of knowing him in the time the Morris family was in Roblin. We shared an equal lifelong passion for basketball. It was sitting with him on a bench in some gym somewhere in the Parkland when Walt planted a seed in my head, encouraging me, somewhat of a lost lamb in life, that I should do something with the artistic talents that I had. He helped motivate me, nearly a decade removed from high school, to look into a career in graphic design. Fast forward thirty-some years and here I sit, recently retired from that design career he nudged me towards, so grateful for the impact he had on my life. I never got the chance to thank Walt in person but do so now, to his family. My condolences to you all.

Walt was remembered by those who knew him as a truly remarkable individual. I worked with Walt from Aug 2005 until Jul 2013 and we became good friends thereafter. He was widely regarded as one with a big heart and he was always kind, warm and generous. People who worked with Walt at Mont’Kiara International School will agree that he has a natural talent for problem solving, his deep knowledge and dedication to education. Walt was also known for his great sense of humor and was always quick with a joke or a smile, which made him a joy to be around. He was loved by everyone he met, and his passing left a huge hole in the lives of those who knew him. Although Walt may be gone, his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of many.

Dear Morris Family, I will be forever grateful to Walt for saying “yes” to this single parent and her 14 year old daughter so that I could fulfill a lifelong dream of living and teaching overseas. Our time in KL was life changing and Walt’s leadership was part of the magic that was MKIS. Peace be with you all!

We are from Winnipeg but only met Walt in Kuala Lumpur when he was Headmaster of Mont Kiara International School. It was our first international move and Walter was so kind to our kids and to us. He was always out chatting with the children who were from all over the world and treated them just like his own. He was a true gentlemen and greatly respected in his position at the school. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Gaye and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. We all feel a deep void for a man who consistently displayed kindness, patience, and trust. We were so fortunate to visit with you and Walt in Kuala Lampur where he was the ultimate host and continued with get togethers at Buena Vista.
We will always keep a special place in our hearts for an honourable man who we considered a dear friend.

Dearest Gaye and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I am very sad that we have all lost this bright light that was Walt. Walt was such a down to earth and generally good-hearted gentle soul. He was an encouraging, understanding and kind headmaster at Mont'Kiara and we had many personal and professional chats in his office there. His occasional appearance at Market Night was always a treat. He will be greatly missed by so many. Words of comfort fail me. I can only send you my love.

Dear Gaye, Aleasha, Chad and families,
We are so very sorry for your loss of this good man. He was indeed a humble man but one with many gifts. He used his intelligence and his grace to make things better for people. He had a gentle humour and a respectful and thoughtful approach to life and those he met. You, his family, were the most important aspect of his life, and he received such joy from being with all of you. We are grateful to have had Walt for a friend, and we will miss him.
