Obituary of John LaHaye

John Alexander LaHaye, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at the age of 76 years. John, aka Johnny La, worked for the City of Regina for 27 years. He had a strong work ethic, never called in sick, and never turned down the offer of an overtime shift. After retiring, John drove a school bus for 14 years. He took great pride in this important role and always had treats for his kids despite rules against this. One of his charters was for the preschoolers at Ehrlo Early Learning Centre, who he transported to a weekly gymnastics class. This was much to the delight of one passenger in particular - one of his grandsons. The daycare kids loved their ride on “Papa’s Bus” almost as much as Papa loved driving them. John enjoyed drinking coffee, a lot of coffee, and was a regular at various Robins Donuts and Tim Hortons restaurants - Medium, 2 sugar, 1 cream, and an ice cube at the bottom of the cup. An avid sports fan, John regularly watched football, curling, and the World Junior hockey tournaments. He enjoyed playing cards. John loved to speak of the one time he had a perfect Crib hand - the date noted on the bottom of his Crib board. Just this past Christmas he won the money pot in the annual family UNO game! John had a weakness when it came to shopping. If he wanted it and it was a good deal, he bought it, even if he already had three of them. His purchases will continue to be found for years to come as new hiding spots are uncovered. John came from humble beginnings and didn’t take his life for granted. He had a generous heart. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. John was a man of few words, but his pride was known through the look in his eyes. He gave what he could to numerous charities over his lifetime. John was a dog lover and dogs loved him. He had been known to pull over on the side of the road when a dog caught his eye, just to say hello and give the pup a good scratch. Predeceased by 6 dogs Snoopy, Blacky, Andy, Muffin, Tiny, and Athena who coincidentally also passed away on Valentine’s Day (15 years ago). He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Elaine; children Lorna, Brian (Chantel), and Sherry (Dennis); grandchildren Brenden, Nic, Eli, Domenic, Ava, and Brandon; and dog, Ginger. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 2026 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Family and friends so wishing to make a donation, in memoriam, please do so to the Regina Humane Society.
