Obituary of Roy Anton Aspelieter

We are saddened to announce the passing of Roy Anton Aspelieter of Regina, Saskatchewan. Roy passed away peacefully on February 25, 2023 with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents Mathias and Helen Aspelieter, brothers Peter and Ben, sister Bella Ganje, brother-in-law Michael Ganje, nephew Les Ganje, and brother-in-law Emmanuel Kuntz. He was also predeceased by his in-laws Joseph and Anastasia Bast. Roy is survived by his loving wife Patricia, daughter Shelley Nicolson (Gord), sons Daryn and Kyle (Shannon), grandsons Cole (Calla) and Taylor (Prairie), sister Eva Kuntz of Estevan, sister-in-law Pat Aspelieter of Mission, B.C., numerous nieces and nephews and his furry friend Brooke.

Roy was born on March 13, 1939 in Minton, Saskatchewan. The family later moved to Torquay and then to Estevan. Roy moved to Regina in 1958 where he met his wife Patricia. They were married on June 2, 1959. In 1961 he began working at the Shop Easy Grocery Store where he eventually worked his way up to manager. This opportunity took the family to Swift Current for two years. In 1967 Roy and Pat returned to Regina where they settled down and purchased a Tomboy grocery store. In July 1976, the manager of the Army and Navy department store at the time convinced Roy to “walk across the street” and join the company. Roy spent the majority of his working life as the general manager at the Army and Navy until his retirement in 1998.

Along with the rest of his family, Roy was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders fan. He was a season ticketholder for over 40 years until his health prevented him from attending the games in person a few years ago. In his retirement Roy spent much of his time with a variety of hobbies. He loved spending time in the garage and the yard fixing things.  He was also a loving “papa” and spent a great deal of time looking after and spending time with his two grandsons. Roy also loved to shop around the garage sale circuit in his retirement as well as travel the United States and Canada on gambling excursions.

The family would like to offer special thanks to JD+C Care Home as well as Monika and the rest of the staff at the Gardiner Point Care Home for their compassionate care in his final days. They would also like to thank Dr. John Morris, all of the staff at the General and Pasqua hospitals, Home Care (East Zone), and EMS for their professional services.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, March 2^nd, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Little Flower R.C. Church, 420 College Avenue, Rev. Jake Ibay presiding (wheelchair accessible through the Edgar Street entrance). Internment at Riverside Cemetery following the lunch.
