Mr. Esch. Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I wanted to be. You were my Grade Eight teacher at Benson School. You saw a young student who could benefit from some guidance, love and understanding. The twinkle in his eye and smirky smile showed a kind, gentle man, who in an instant could make you laugh and giggle till you cried. His encouragement and "you can do it" attitude made me feel as if I I could "fly higher than an eagle". In April, he could see my hard work to excel in his class and he asked me if I wanted to make the "recommends" list at the end of the school year. Somehow he knew that was my goal but said it would require hard work and that he felt I could do it. The day came when he read the "recommendation" list in class. He went to each student's desk that got one and congratulated them for a job well done. My heart sank as he returned to his desk at the front of the room but was happy for my friends that got one. He paused, then picked something from his desk and said "Oh, there is one more, I nearly forgot!". He walked to my desk and proudly, with a teasing grin said, here's yours Debbie!! My special teacher, didn't forget me at all. Mr Esch, I will never forget you, your encouragement and genuine care. Many times in University when I was discouraged I would think of you and wonder what you would say; that kept me on track and work harder. I graduated with Great Distinction (BScN) and focused on Public Health where I could be like you, become a "health teacher" in the Community Schools I worked in. Thank you, thank you for being the best teacher ever Mr. Esch! Your family is lucky to have and cherish memories of you for always. And Heaven has gained an Angel!

Saddened to hear of Don’s passing. So many fond memories of a “really good guy”. Don laughed easily, he laughed often, and he wasn’t afraid to laugh at himself. Everyone should be as comfortable in their own skin as Don. Remember the good times! He will be missed…..Dave and Pat Taylor and family.

Dan and Denise,
So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of your father. We were unable to attend the service due to a miserable cold which I did not want to share. Viewed the service online and I am sure your dad would have approved. A lovely service for a wonderful man. Our sincere condolences to you and your family.

Wonderful service and family memories! Thank you for sharing! Don was my grade 7 teacher - Wetmore, 1959 - 60! He certainly recognized student talents! After that year, once in awhile we met each other on the streets of Regina - he always remembered my name.
After teaching 34 years in another school division, I joined a security company and we were involved with the Rider games. Now I saw Don in a new role. Hello " Gainer Chauffeur "! After all those years, Don still knew my name! God bless your family!

A life well lived and lasting memories is all we can ask for. “Mr. Esch” was my elementary school principal and left a lasting impression on me of what a true good human being and leader was. While a strong presence as a principal and a man you didn’t want to disappoint, he carried a good nature, humanity and ability to encourage a young student to achieve more. More impressive, all the years following whenever we’d cross paths he knew us all, including our families. I’ve never forgot that. So genuine. We were fortunate to have you in our lives Mr. Esch. Rest easy.

I was sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was always such a positive person with a big smile. I remember him fondly as my teacher at Lakeview School in the early 60's and as a colleague for many years with Regina Public Schools. Wherever Don was there was laughter! My condolences to the family at this sad time.

Sharron and Family
We've received this news with such profound sadness.
Don was and always will be a fixture in our family. I have so many, many memories of this wonderful man. As a child I grew up with him always around and then later had the privilege of knowing him as a grown man. Don was without a doubt my father's best friend. I too came to appreciate his warmth and place in my own life.
Don was a teacher... a teacher of so many things. He lived joy, laughter, thoughtfulness and kindness. He lived and taught by his example.
I know I speak for my father and my family when I express our sorrow and sense of loss. But more I want to express our gratitude. Our lives are better because of Don.
All our love

Mr. Esch was our elementary principal. As an adult we moved onto his street to discover he remembered our names like it was yesterday which is an amazing memory. It was a pleasure to walk our dog by their house to get a friendly greeting or a chat as we passed by. He will be greatly missed by all that were fortunate to know him.
May he live on in the memories of his family.

We remember Don washing the Gainer car in his driveway before every Rider home game. I also remember on our fishing trips when the two Protestants, Don & I, against the two Catholics, Gord & Dave, to see who would catch the most fish.
Don was a Great man, a Great teacher & a Great friend to all of us who had the pleasure to know him.
Our deepest sympathies to Sharron, Dan, Cathie, Jeff & Chris & your families.
