VOGELSANG, Lidwina “Winnie” nee Bergerman

December 23, 1923 – March 16, 2023

It is with great love and cherished memories that we announce Winnie’s passing on Thursday, March 16, 2023.  She was surrounded by family in her final hours and peacefully went to be with her Lord and Saviour.

She was predeceased by her husband August (Gus); her son Tom Vogelsang; her grandson, August Jr; and great granddaughter, Claire Fink.  She is predeceased by 15 siblings, their spouses, the Vogelsang siblings and their spouses, and many more relatives and friends.

Winnie is survived by her sister, Francis Poelking and 8 children, Evelyn (Allan) Huber, Dick (Betty) Vogelsang, Bob (Luba) Vogelsang, Ellen (Al) Barber, Dave (Jo-Anne) Vogelsang), Greg (Annette) Vogelsang, Roy (Sharon) Vogelsang and August (Liana) Vogelsang. She will also be lovingly remembered by her 19 grandchildren, 27 (and counting) great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Winnie was born on December 23, 1923 on the family farm outside of Muenster, Saskatchewan.  It was here along with her 16 siblings that she learned the meaning of hard work, sharing, compassion and the importance of family.  Her tenacity was a great asset and it served her well as she lived through the Great Depression and World War II.  It also was here that her strong Catholic faith was fostered which remained with her until her final days.

As a young woman, Winnie met the love of her life, a handsome young soldier returning from World War II.  Before settling in Regina in 1966, they moved between Garrick, Lake Lenore, Humboldt and Melville Saskatchewan.  Gus and Winnie loved to travel and enjoyed many lovely trips with family and friends.   They were proud to raise their 9 children with similar values, focusing on hard work, good times and a ‘get-er-done’ attitude.  The children appreciated this as these values have served them well.

Winnie was a long-time member of St. Anne’s Parish and the CWL.  It was through the church that she volunteered countless hours helping others.

Winnie was well-known for her expertise in the kitchen, and she was considered a talented baker and cook by all who were blessed to know her.  Her cinnamon buns, potato salad, cookies and dinner buns were among her most famous delicacies and are still remembered to this day.  She was happiest when her home was full of people, gathered around the table enjoying her meals.

Winnie loved music and you could always find her humming a tune, dancing, playing the piano or singing lullaby to her grandchildren.  Even in her final days, her family made sure to have music playing for her in the background.

Winnie was never one to make a fuss or complain even at the very end and will be remembered by all as a kind, patient, hard-working and selfless person.  All her love and attention went directly to her family and those in need.  Her grandchildren will hold in their hearts all of the precious memories of having sleepovers, being spoiled rotten, and always leaving her home feeling so loved.  It is a comfort to Winnie’s family that she has joined her husband and son and many loved ones.  There is no doubt that she is dancing, laughing, and looking down on the legacy she has left behind.

The family would like to thank Father Stephen Bill for administering last rites.  The family would also like to thank the staff at Sunset Extendicare, Regina, SK.  Their kindness and compassion made Winnie feel at home for the last four years.  They are very special people.

The funeral mass of Christian Burial for Winnie will be held at Resurrection Roman Catholic Church, 3155 Windsor Park Road, Regina, SK on Friday April 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Co-celebrants are Father Brad Fahlman and Father Stephen Bill.  Burial to follow in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Donations in Winnie’s memory can be made to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Regina General Hospital.

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.  If I shall die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.
