Deep deep condolences to all of Byrna's families for our loss. Byrna's many undertakings and accomplishments, and their value to community, have been well noted. Her chief contribution, through all these things, is perhaps as a role model for living a life with passion, no matter what you're doing. Everything Byrna did, everyone she loved, was with all her heart. An example and a legacy to (try to) live up to.

My earliest memory of Byrna took place during a family gathering in Turtleford around 1974. Julianna was a beautiful, mysterious teenager whom I surveyed nervously from various corners of my grandmother's living room and Bruce was an equally mysterious boy, busy and loud. Ron had to leave for home ahead of his family, and Byrna followed him out the screen door to walk him to his car. Outside, my six-year-old self watched as they walked slowly, talking and holding hands, stopping at the car to kiss goodbye. I have other memories of Byrna, of her enthusiasm, her creative spirit and her fierce and joyous love for her family. But this one, this snapshot of two people in love, is where I will always find Byrna.

Byrna was a Champion in our community. She championed the Literary Arts through her skill as an author and playwright. She championed Mental Health services through her outstanding work with the CMHA where served as President of the Saskatchewan Division and on the National Board. She championed all of the arts through her work on the Saskatchewan Arts Board and her term as Chairperson of the SAB. I think one of her greatest accomplishments was championing those who experience mental health challenges through her work with the CMHA magazine, Transition. As creator and Editor of Transition, Byrna provided those who have experienced our mental health system and have experienced mental health challenges with the opportunity to express their creativity and thoughts through their own words, published to permit many people to learn from their experiences. I will miss Byrna and rue the fact that we didn't have that one more opportunity time to visit.

On behalf of the Scandinavian Club of Regina, we want to extend our condolences to Byrna's family in their loss. Less than one year ago, Byrna worked with our Club to host a summer solstice event and honor a Canadian poet, Harold Rhenisch, whose books she had published. She so generously gave of her time, talents and her books to make this event a success. We are grateful that she shared her love of the written word and its authors with us. She broadened our minds and will live on in our memories of that event.

I spent many fun and stimulating Saturday nights in Byrna and Ron's living room with The Combine during my Regina years. Byrna had an excellent eye - not just for writing, but for colour and design. She was a true creative who expressed her love for life at every turn.
Thank goodness our paths crossed.
My sympathies to Ron and family.

With Byrna's passing goes so much of Saskatchewan's literary history. She was there when the renaissance happened, when Saskatchewan writers became nationally renowned, and she played a major role as a writer herself, an editor, a publisher, a mentor, and a passionate advocate. All the while she held onto her love of family and her belief in the good in people. She and Ron hosted countless gatherings of writers at their house, some a bit chaotic and crazy. Ron was an integral part of it all, and I hope I was correct in thinking he enjoyed himself. I will miss her, her grace and optimism. Wherever she is, she's probably started another version of Barclay Books! Look out for them.

I was so sorry to hear of Byrna's passing. We worked together so closely on the editing and publication of my debut novel, and I know for certain it wouldn't have happened without her. She took on a naive fiction writer and helped craft a story I'm very proud of and, although I'm sure I exasperated her to no end (in ways only Ron probably knows), she was always ready with encouragement. When she'd find something in the manuscript that wasn't right yet, she'd say, "It's good. But just a little more, just a couple of sentences..." She pushed to make the story, the characters, the setting better, and she did it in a way I felt I could accomplish what she was asking. We butted heads now and then, and threw her hands up about how often a particular character kept showing up. I kept the page with her note scrawled across the top: "Are you in love with this guy? What in the ding dong is Hank doing in this scene???" She pulled 50 pages off the manuscript and said "This will be your second novel" when I wasn't sure I'd get the first done. She invited me to visit in Palm Desert so we could hammer out what we needed to do to get this first one published. I got horribly lost, showed up nearly two hours late, but she and Ron were both gracious and welcoming. A favourite photo I have is the two of them in the doorway as I left, both adamantly pointing me in the right direction: "Go back the way you came!" I owe Byrna so much and I'm grateful our paths crossed. And that second novel? It's a sequel and Byrna will be thanked yet again for believing it would happen. My condolences to Ron and the rest of the family.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Byrna. I knew Byrna throughout my early life. My memories as a young boy are of someone who took an active interest in the creative play of the children on Bell Street. When we would put on small plays or magic shows, she would send over Julianna and Bruce to act as our 'audience'. On hot summer days, she might bring along some lemonade to dole out alongside words of encouragement. Several years later, as a Philosophy student at U of R, I again crossed paths with Byrna through our mutual involvement with the Sask Arts Board. I particularly remember one thoughtful afternoon we spent discussing Victor Frankl's 'Man's Search for Meaning,' a book that had a profound effect on her. She was a wonderful soul and important promoter of the arts in our community. My condolences to Bruce, Julianna, Zoe, and Ron.

What set her apart? She was a leader whose support and encouragement benefited many. The world needs more of her character.
Her book, The Summer of the Hungry Pup, remains one of our favorites.
We are sad to turn this last page, but grateful we have been left with her works to read again.

I will miss my book-selling partner. Byrna loved being out with her books and meeting people. Often she would see a young boy or girl who was interested in books but didn't have the money to purchase them. She gladly gifted the book of interest. Byrna loved talking about writing. She was interested in everything about people. I know she's gathering more stories in the great beyond. Ron, Julianna, Bruce and Zoe you were the people dearest to her and those she hated to leave. Deepest sympathy for your loss.
