SMYCNIUK, Zenon Roy
1940 – 2023
It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Zenon R. Smycniuk on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at the age of 82 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Katherine Smycniuk and parents-in-law, Walter, and Victoria Mazden.
Zenon is survived by his loving wife Dolores (nee Mazden) of 57 years; three children: Darcy (Andrea), Kendra (Mac) and Treena (Scott); grandchildren Alexandra Smycniuk (Evan), and Zachary and Hunter Auramenko. Zenon also leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Lorris Kuz; brother-in-law, Ed Mazden (Lucy); sister-in-law, Marilyn Chambers (Dave); and numerous nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.
Zenon was born on June 18, 1940, in a rural area north of Ituna, Saskatchewan. Upon completion of his elementary and high school, he went on to the University of Saskatchewan for two years then enrolled in Teachers College in Regina. He completed his education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 (U of S) and a Bachelor of Education in 1970 (U of S). He began his teaching career in Ituna, Saskatchewan in 1961 where he met his love, Dolores, who he married in 1965. In 1968, they moved to Regina where he was employed by the Regina Roman Catholic school system. Zenon taught for 33 successful and rewarding years until he retired in 1994 and his entire career was dedicated to teaching, guidance counselling, and special education.
Zenon had many interests, but his favorite was music. He started playing the violin at age 7 and became interested in guitar. Self-taught, he played in many bands as a rhythm guitar player. He played with the Echo-phonics (1960s), who entertained at many parties, weddings, and anniversaries, and played with the Four-Star band in Regina for a number of years. He enjoyed playing at dances and senior citizen homes with the Polka Dots until he was 76 years old.
Throughout his lifetime, he was very active and could be found enjoying many sports including curling, golf, four-wall handball and working out at the gym. His active lifestyle remained into his 80th year as he continued to play doubles tennis.
Throughout his life and in their retirement years, Zenon and Dolores enjoyed travelling. Over the past 15 years, you could find them escaping the cold winters and spending time in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona where they found comfort, relaxation, and joy.
A private Celebration of Life, officiated by Father Brian Meredith, was held on May 19, 2023.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Pasqua Hospital for their genuine care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, Oncology 3B at Pasqua Hospital (hrf.sk.ca).
